FlyingSwine (169), Littleton, Colorado, USA Dec 29, 2007 2007 bottle. Pour DARK brown/black and thick from the bottle, almost like cough syrup, with a small tan head. Aroma of malt and alcohol. Flavor is a cross between a port and beer, but despite being unlike any stout I’ve ever encounterd, its pretty tasty. After watching this thick liquid pour from the bottle, the palate isn’t as heavy as I expected. This is not an everday drinker, but a really good 1-2 times/year brew. yjb (110), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Dec 29, 2007 Why hello there big boy... you’re a bit strong and hot yet smooth ad chocolaty ... not so fast... slipping in my tongue, a little butter doesnt hurt you? Canadianlush (169), Scottsdale, Arizona, USA Dec 28, 2007 Sorry, not my cup to tea. If you want to make a wine, then make a wine. There is nothing stout about this beer. It tastes more like a poorly made cab than a stout. Way too much alcohol, and that’s coming from a whiskey drinker. It overwhelmes everthing about the beer, from the aroma to the finish. A $9 gimmick in my estimation. BrewmeisterEd (59), USA Dec 28, 2007 Poured in a cabernet glass...thick pour/no lacing or active bubbles...strong aroma of burnt(?) wood with the alcohol content coming through in the nose. Very sweet - to the point of wondering if they yanked it early from the fermenter to cap the abv %. I’m feeling a bit conflicted regarding this one - on the one hand, I think it would make an impressive complement to a holiday dinner or as an after-dinner digestive to be enjoyed with a good stogie...problem is, that’s what I buy fine wine for...as a beer, it’s too much for me - too sweet, too much alcohol, and too much $. An unbelievable technical marvel from an awesome brewer but one I’m glad I’ll say ’I’ve had that - it kicked ass’ but most likely won’t purchase again. Sort of like being able to brag you rode th latest roller coaster but would just as well live off the memory for a while Soonah (900), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA Dec 28, 2007 2006 bottle. The pour was dark but hardly viscous. The head was brown and fleeting. Very disappointing start. The aroma was roasted malt, chocolate, dark molasses and brown sugars, some raisin as well. A hint of alcohol heat as well. The flavor reminded me of a thin Mephistopheles. That sugary sweet blast struggling to keep pace with the overabundance of alcohol. Like a sherry or a port, not like a good IS. The mouthfeel is actually on the thin side in this one. The hops are lost in the confusion. This beer had a pricetag of $9.59 on top of it. For that I’d almost be able to buy an entire six pack of Expedition. For that price I could buy two 4 packs of Gonzo. I’m seldom one to bitch about pricing, but what horrid value this one was. Slacks (481), Bolton, Ontario, Canada Dec 28, 2007 12oz Bottle: Found this one for $9/bottle at Consumer’s a few days after a friendly beerbistro bartender told me it was his favourite DFH offering. I had no idea how difficult it could be to find, so I feel happy to have this opportunity. I should note - I cracked it open to celebrate the reuniting of my favourite old rock band, Extreme. Nuno rocks! Anyways.. pours pitch pitch black with very little head or any carbonation, simply a syrupy black pour into the snifter. Where to start with the aroma? Rich wine aroma, prunes, plums, berries, milk chocolate and molasses, and the promise of some caramel malts are just a few of what my mid-level discerning ability can pull out. The flavour.. wow.. provides all that it promised with some great hopping, all married together in one heavenly sip after another. Let this one warm, it only gets better as the mouthfeel becomes so silky and the yeastiness bursts forth with an almost dough-like after taste. Berries.. chocolate.. dough.. it’s like drinking a freaking pie, but I’d do it again without thinking. Good work, boys, good work. thooper41 (384), Oregon, USA Dec 27, 2007 12oz bottle: pitch black not a whole lot of head. aroma of roasted malt chocolate and hops. flavor has the same hop taste as their 90 and 120min IPAs but the malt end is something new chocolate and roasted flavor and somewhat sweet. great beer but i could tie it to their IPAs in a heatbeat. not saying the hops are over the top like an IPA just same hop flavor. PhillyHomeBrew (176), Forest Hills, New York, USA Dec 27, 2007 Because of the horrible interface, this is the third time I am rating this beer. It has a very dark body with a very small, but dark tan head. The aroma is full of chocolate, roasted coffee, and a huge burnt caramel scent. The flavor has a ton of that burnt caramel with a bit of hops.
