emerica56 (575), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Dec 14, 2007 This beer is extreamly black and there is a nice tan and thin head to it. There is also some minor laceing but nothing over the top. The aroma is very sweet and woody with some minor hints of booze with a malt background. As the beer warms and you take the first sip the initial taste is very swet, some bitterness but that fades quick. After that it remains sweet and full of honey and some mild fruits. The booze is also not hidden well in this it coats you mouth and palate witha a chocolate boozey finish. There is also a nice black cherry and mild coffee after taste but it fades rather quick. rustychiles (997), Mesa, Arizona, USA Dec 12, 2007 Updated: Dec 14, 2007One of my favorite brews of all time.
Bottle of 2006 aged 1 year for this review.
How they fit this legendary stout at this ABV into this beer I will never know. If you disagree age it at least a year and find out what i’m talking about.
Poured a thick deep black into a snifter with little to no head.
Aroma of chocolate, rasins, and heaven were present. Flavor was sweet yet well balanced and the alcohol when aged a year is very subtle. If i were trapped in a blizzard in my underwear this beer could very well keep me alive for a night. Excellent job Dogfish Head. JLAudio (282), Crestwood, Illinois, USA Dec 11, 2007 Updated: Nov 21, 2008This beer poured somewhat thinner than I expected and had absolutely zero head which I was dissapointed with. It was slightly carbonated at first, just enough, and stayed consistant throughout. The aromas of chocolate, raisins, and roasted nuts were quite nice. The flavor was good, but I didn’t think it was as balanced as it could have been. There was an overlying sweetness that I didn’t exactly agree with, as it was actually cloying at times. The flavors though were very complex and delicious otherwise. The alcohol was definitley hidden well, for 18%. A sipping stout for sure. Havebeerwt (4), Jacksonville, Florida, USA does not count Dec 11, 2007 Love the aroma & strength. This beer may be a bit strong for many people, but it’s definately a stout - stout. Dogfish does not make a bad beer, and this one is for true stout lovers. DogfishHead Master Brewer is not afraid to take chances, and loves his craft! beerheart (237), Erie, Colorado, USA Dec 11, 2007 2005 bottle. Poured black as oil. Very little carbonation. Aromas of bourbon, licorice, raisins. Very fulll mouthfeel. Tastes of molasses and licorice.
This is a very nice beer. It’s very rich. Finishes like a port. I’m preferring more hop these days. gpekar (221), Maryland, USA Dec 9, 2007 Picked up a 4 pack at the Dogfish brewery Nov 2007. Split a bottle with my wife in snifters. It poured a deep black with hardly any head. What head there was was just a thin film tan in color that vanished very soon. I would have given this a 5 for appearance, but I think a head Is a vital part of appearance for me. The aroma of raisins and alcohol was most prevelent with scents of chocolate from time to time. The flavor was sweet, but not over done. The alcohol comes thru the flavor, but again is not over powering. It is hidden pretty well for being 18% by the sweetness of molasses. The palate becomes slightly warm from the alcohol and leaves a nice flavor and finish on the tongue. It’s an excellant sipping beer for a nice cold night with a fire. I plan on aging the other bottles awhile. wj94 (64), Virginia, USA Dec 8, 2007 Is this a port wine or a beer? Smells of alcohol/raisins/caramel/chocolate/brown sugar. For 18% alcohol the bite is hidden pretty well. This one is surely different than any other beer I’ve had. Have 3 left, will age the others (if I can wait that long) and review those at another time. MoDog (909), Griffith, Indiana, USA Dec 7, 2007 Poured from a 2007 vintage bottle and served in a snifter. This beer poured almost totally black with only a few dark brown highlights around the edges of the glass. A thin head of tan foam mostly diminished, leaving only a few lingering bubbles. A fair amount of slippery lace quickly fell back into the beer. The aroma of the beer was made up of bourbon, rasins, vanilla, sweet caramel, very mild roasted notes, and also a slightly sweet and sour alcoholic note. The aroma was very unique. Vey different than any other Imperial stout that I have had the pleasure of drinking. The flavor of the beer consisted of overly sweet dark fruits, molasses, and alcohol. The roasted malts were almost undistinguishable beneath the cloyingly sweet fruit and alcohol. Definately a sipper! As the beer approached room temperature, the flavor started to grow on me a bit more. The mouthfeel was slick and medium to full-bodied with very lively carbonation. Not exactly my cup of tea, but I will definately set a bottle aside to see what some age can do for this very off-centered ale.
