Guerde (696), Welcome, Minnesota, USA Dec 3, 2007 (bottle from 06) Poured a very dark brown with a light tan head that dissipated quickly. Smell initially was a lot of raisin with some chocolate, which then switched to more molasses/brown sugar as it warmed along with some alcohol that stings the nostrils, and dark fruit. Taste was really sweet, with hints of raisin, chocolate, and some dark fruit with a light, but lingering roasted malt finish, and a little alcohol present. This was pretty good, but for the price, this will be my first and final purchase of this product. OSLO (825), Perth, Australia Dec 3, 2007 [Bottle ’06 release] Pours dark brown with a brown head that quickly disappeared. Aroma is very sweet with a lot of raisin, chocolate, brown sugar, molasses and, as it warmed up, alcohol. Taste is very very sweet up front with the raisin and chocolate coming through most strongly. Roasted malt becomes apparent towards the end, along with more chocolate and a slight burn on the tongue from the alcohol. Medium mouthfeel. Long finish. A very solid beer--but just far too sweet for me and definitely not worth the price SHIG (2012), Aviano, Italy Dec 3, 2007 Bottle at Toms Ultimate Glasgow Tasting (2003): Poured a reddish brown with a tan color head. The aroma is very alcohol and burns at your nose hairs. The taste continues with high alcohol tingle along the way to a dark fruits and chocolate malt. Magicdave6 (5400), London, Greater London, England Dec 3, 2007 Bottle at ultimate glasgow tasting, 03 bottling. Aroma smacks you with alcohol, hints of chocolate malt, but roasted alcohol mainly. Taste is similar, sore to swollow, soo much alcohol, and its lower % than the 120min ipa which had no alcohol. Really a horrible beer. cgarvieuk (4159), Edinburgh, Scotland Dec 2, 2007 Bottle at Toms Ultimate Glasgow Tasting ... Deep black ... little roast malt in nose ... sweet fruity treacle and cherry and other dark fruits ... This was packed full of more flavour than the Dark Lord but didnt hav quite as nice a mouthfeel. robforbes (1083), Bremerton, Washington, USA Dec 1, 2007 bottled in 2007, lime green cap, sticker on bottle saying "20% by volume".
pour is jet black, held up to a lamp no light penetrates, thin brown head, nice lacing.
smell - there is a lot here, deep chocolate, roastiness, malt, burnt wood, a hint of caramel, and a bit of vanilla, some licorice, and if you smell is long enough espresso pops it head out.
taste - smooth at first and then hit your taste buds right in the face, warm to the stomach, rich dark coffee, bakers chocolate, the feel of alcohol dances on the tongue.
overall this is just a wee bit strong for me. very, very, nice flavor, better as it warms up. Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA Nov 29, 2007 2005 Release shared by theisti. Pours jet black with a thin, tan head which quickly diminishes to an oily surface, leaving patchy lace and a ring of bubbles clinging to the edge of the glass. The nose is a solid, smoky malt and a hint of alcohol; it’s fairly monotone on the nose, which surprised me given this beer’s reputation. The mouthfeel, however, is quite nice: full-bodied and oily with soft, creamy carbonation and a nice warm finish. Super sweet, peaty, dark, roasted malt with dark fruity notes of raisins and prunes and a touch of alcohol at the finish. Considering the ABV, the alcohol, in this beer, is exceptionally well integrated. Delicious, warm and inviting, this is a beer that makes me wish for a long, lazy weekend sitting in front of a fire while snow falls outside. Of course, I would have to find another bottle of this beer first... Thanks again for sharing this with me, Tim! theisti (1640), Leawood, Kansas, USA Nov 29, 2007 Updated: Nov 30, 200712 oz. bottle from from willblake, shared with Gregis. This was the 2005 version, tasted side by side with a 2007 Oskar Blues Ten FIDY. Pour is all black with a tan head that starts small and disappears fast. Aroma of faint roasted malt and a hint of grassy earthiness. Taste is big, sweet malt, licorice, a whole bunch of heat and some hop bitterness. There is also smoke smokiness in the flavor as well. The heat in this one is odd, it really doesn’t detract at all from the flavor, more enhances it. Almost like a straight single malt Whisky. The flavor of this one really takes the show, its big and brawny, yet somehow blended and complex. Really interesting. Thanks for this one Jon!
Side by side impressions: wow, these are two totally different beers. The Ten FIDY was really big and bold in the pour and the aroma, and the DFH was huge in the flavor. Hard to say which I enjoyed more, they were both great, but for really different reasons. Where the Ten FIDY is just overwhelming coffee, the WWS is almost like a nip of booze, just so big and complex. Not sure I learned anything by doing these side by side, but it was fun!
