| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 25, 2002 Two pours into identical clean glasses, one has a foamy head, one has nothing. Served at 53°F sampled up to 57.5°F. Anise, chocolate, oak in the nose. Flavor is lush on a flat soft feel. A bit of smoke in a stoutish body with anise, fruit, raisins, chocolate and some black pepper. I can’t believe this is 18%ABV. Again it has that clean Dogfish Head profile despite a barrage of flavor. An amazing brewing accomplishment. ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 18, 2005 2004 bottle. extremely filling and slightly harsh beer, this is definatly one that is not ready to be consumed when i chose to drink it. sweet chocolate aroma slightly tainted by the rather large dose of alcohol present. these guys make great brews, but one like this is probably ready to drink in more than 2 years, not 2 months past brewing. still an unbelievable beer that i will enjoy a couple of years from now (i have a 2003 bottle) and im sure that will be much more satisfying. great beer though BeerPrince (1701), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 25, 2006 Near black in colour with a minimal tan head. Aroma is dark chocolate, roasted malt and alcohol along with some spruce, caramel and roasted nuts. Nice sweet flavour like melted chocolate on a sundae. Rich, and full boodied throughout with a ton of choclate throughout. Finishes with a whiskey and Irish cream taste. Very tasty beer. BuckeyeBoy (1696), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 27, 2007 12oz bottle pours out black topped with a very small tan head. GREAT aroma coffee and roast malt. Tast is very nice. I can pick up some of the alcohol but it’s not 18% to me. Thanks Buckybeer for this one. theisti (1696), Leawood, Kansas, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 29, 2007 Updated: Nov 30, 200712 oz. bottle from from willblake, shared with Gregis. This was the 2005 version, tasted side by side with a 2007 Oskar Blues Ten FIDY. Pour is all black with a tan head that starts small and disappears fast. Aroma of faint roasted malt and a hint of grassy earthiness. Taste is big, sweet malt, licorice, a whole bunch of heat and some hop bitterness. There is also smoke smokiness in the flavor as well. The heat in this one is odd, it really doesn’t detract at all from the flavor, more enhances it. Almost like a straight single malt Whisky. The flavor of this one really takes the show, its big and brawny, yet somehow blended and complex. Really interesting. Thanks for this one Jon!
Side by side impressions: wow, these are two totally different beers. The Ten FIDY was really big and bold in the pour and the aroma, and the DFH was huge in the flavor. Hard to say which I enjoyed more, they were both great, but for really different reasons. Where the Ten FIDY is just overwhelming coffee, the WWS is almost like a nip of booze, just so big and complex. Not sure I learned anything by doing these side by side, but it was fun! jimhilt (1694), Bow, New Hampshire, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Dec 11, 2008 Very similar to their 2002 version, pours a three finger light tan head that fades soon leaving some lace. Black color. Heavy bodied and medium carbonation. Nose is molasses and alcohol. Flavor is sweet molasses with some alcohol, more intense as it warms, finish smooth not cloying. If there is an imperial barley wine this is it. Expensive, $7.99 for a 12 oz bottle from Tullys Beer and Wine Wells, Me.

| 4.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Nov 16, 2003 Large dark brown head that lasts, good lacing also. BIG roasty, coffee nose, nice fruityness with some hints of alcohol. Full Bodied! As it warms more aromas are coming through, cherries, peaches some smoke. Creamy luciuos mouthfeel, feels good sliding down yer throat, warming. Vinous, chocolatey, black malt. A very complex beer.Subdued roastiness. 18% alc. hard to fathom, its well hidden. I,ve been sitting on this bottle for at least 2-3 years now, maybe longer though. Original first offering i believe. I,m impressed, a totally drinkable big ass brew! DFHs best i,d say.WOW! Finish is med sweet, roasty, coffeeish, damn fine aftertaste. Just totally impressive. MMMMM, AHHHHHHH. Wished i had purchased more back then. Who,da thunk? Butters (1688), Virginia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 22, 2009 2008 bottle split with brent at woody’s. Dark brown pour with ruby highlights and wispy ring of light brown head. Nose of roasted malts, toffee, chocolate, and just the slightest indication of the abv. Flavors of muted alcohol, roast malt, raisins, smoke, leather, and an earthy dirt quality. Medium chewy body with fair carbonation. Anise and molassis come out more as it warms. This does a remarkable job of masking the abv. I know a lot of people were talking shit about the 2008 release, but this was just fine to me!
