4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 PhillyBeer2112 (2361) - Oviedo, USA - JUN 5, 2001
UPDATED: JAN 5, 2004 An unbelievably good beer. I was wary, but
whoa - this really does taste like beer
and is very drinkable and enjoyable. The aroma
contained notes of dark fruits (dates, plums)
but also tobacco, vanilla, and wine. The flavor was
similar - and highly comparable to a port wine, except
with a much drier finish that makes it much much more
enjoyable than some cloying ports. This beer makes
me want to throw my entire collection of port and madeira
and replace it with this - the first truly high powered
sipping beer that you can savor all the way through.
Slight head that dissipated quickly - but a definite mild
carbonation. Very black in color. Main drawback -
a beer this huge should come in 9oz bottles. One 12oz of
this will knock you back.
Draught addendum - still everything I
remember it as. Rich and complex with
vanilla and pipe tobacco notes.
Draught version is really no
different than bottled - for one,
it is not carbonated.<P>
Update for the 2003 version - I assume its the new 18.8% 2003 beer as it contains no reference to Vim and Vigor on the label at all. My notes: Room temp from a wine glass.
This is not similar to the original 18% beer, it still has many of the sweet roasted malt overtones but is markedly less sweet, with a new licorice flavor dominating up front. Licorice and maple are present in the nose. The beer is overall less roundly sweet than the original 18% beer and serves less well as a replacement to port/dessert wine. Both stronger bitterness and alcohol reduce the sweet front of the beer. Alcohol flavor and burn rise more strongly from the middle and end of the palate, making for an overall less savorable drink. Very dark brown color, near opaque with a thin brown head that fades to nothing, leaving only small dots for lace. Beer is more carbonated than I remember. I am not changing the rating numbers due to my love of the original beer, but I rated the new one to a total of 3.4 out of 5.

Just had this on tap at ØL Beer Cafe in Walnut Creek. (A)Pours a beautiful lightless black with just a touch of head in a tulip. (S) Lots of roasty chocolate, and dark fruit in the nose. (T) Roasty and chocolate up front with some chocolate and vanilla after. Finishes smooth with just a hint of alcohol. (P) Fantastic, smooth and creamy. (O) One of the best Imperial Stout’s I’ve ever tasted.
3.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Rrauth (222) - - MAY 27, 2012
Bottle. 2010 d. Aroma smells like wort. The alcohol is there. No head no lacing. Awesome stout but this is for a cigar and to get drunk. Palatable but tastes like wort on steroids.

Poured into my bruery tulip. Black with a two finger head great lacing throughout, beautiful beer. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee and sweet dark fruits. Taste is sweet and hot but not too much so. Great flavor but I think it would be even better with a couple years. Mouthfeel is pretty good, a little thinner than expected but not bad.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 ngeunit1 (819) - Mountain View, California, USA - MAY 18, 2012
A -Pours a dark brown-black color with a thin layer of frothy chocolate colored head atop. The head fades down fairly quickly leaving behind a bit of lace.
S - Aroma is full of lots of roasted and burnt chocolate and caramel malts with coffee and a bit of dark fruit, licorice, and a good amount of booze.
T - Starts off with some rich dark fruit and chocolate malts with some coffee and licorice flavors. Through the middle, some more roasted flavors come through with some more coffee, booze, and vanilla, and some more dark chocolate flavor. The finish is a mix of dark chocolate, dark fruit, coffee, licorice, and booze.
M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and thick with a warming and sweet finish.
D - Pretty drinkable. Really big and huge with lots of chocolate malt flavor. The overall balance is nice with a good level of smoothness considering the 18% abv.

Wow! This beer is intense. It was down pouring outside in a little pub. This beer was perfect for that. But the high alcohol content will knock your socks off.

Wow is this rich. Very strong alcohol presence. Immediately the sweetness hits you, and it is almost too much. And this is all while cold! The roastiness and chocolate comes through in the middle and lingers to the very end.

Bottle thanks to cbkschubert. Please God...make them sell this stuff in Texas... Almost black with a somewhat short-lived soapy beige head. Scattered lacing. Aroma of roast, raisins, light alcohol, wood, chocolate, coffee and vanilla. The taste is decadent. Super rich and roasty, sweet and fruity, chocolaty, a little boozy, and a little bitter at the finish. Full bodied, smooth and creamy, a touch tingly on the tongue and dry. I love it! Awesome send Craig. Thanks again!
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 phredrik (882) - Aalborg, DENMARK - MAY 9, 2012
Bottle shared by RasmusOtt, thanks. Dark brown pour, a small head that goes away fast. Aroma is packed with dark malts, cocoa, chocolate, sweet coffee liquor, dark fruits, chocolate truffle, a hint if vanilla and oak - nice aroma. Taste is very sweet and malty - dark fudge, chocolate, coffee bitterness, a good deal of alcohol heat and bite as it goes down. Well balanced, but rather hot. Decent carbonation considering the abb.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 RasmusOtt (775) - Aalborg, DENMARK - MAY 8, 2012
Pours almost black with a brown head. Aroma is obviously some alcohol, raisins, coffee, rather sugary, dates, figs, rich chocolate, vanilla, dry dark fruits and overall with a pretty nice balance between the sweetness and the booze. Taste is sugary, big booze, chocolate, dry alcohol, dark dried fruits, chocolate and vanilla. A bit too much here but overall pretty good!
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 BeerGolem (96) - - MAY 5, 2012
Dark beer with no head. Aroma is of alcohol (but well balanced, considerin it is an 18% beer), dark fruits, raisins, and barley. Taste is sweet. Well balanced. Watery texture. A very good beer.
Bière foncée (couleur prune) sans collet. Arome d’alcool (assez bien balancé, toutefois, pour cette bière à 18%), fruits foncées, raisins et orge. Goût sucré. Bien balancé. Texture aqueuse. Une très bonne bière.
