4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 arjoseph (634) - Chicago, USA - APR 26, 2005
UPDATED: JUL 1, 2005 Original Rating: 4. 12 oz bottle into tulip glass. 2003 bottle. I just signed my soul and financial future over to law school, so I thought it would be time to break out the big boy. Banana aroma explodes from the bottle. I could smell it almost immediately upon opening. Other smells: pine resin, cough syrup, chocolate milk, and a stinging that can only be the alcohol. Deep black in the glass with one of the darkest heads I’ve seen (burnt caramel with what seems to be pinkish tinges at the edges), small bubbles of medium size that diminishes to a thin layer and about a centimeter gathering at the edges. Lacing extends about an inch, but isn’t too sticky; not much sub-surface "racing," but at least there’s some. Amazingly smooth at first for its size, the alcohol only becomes evident later (and then only subtly). Smooth crystal malt rapidly fades to a syrupy dry chocolate sweetness that coats the tounge (one of many similarities to cough syrup). Syrupy prune flavor pervades. The roast malt comes on slowly and becomes prickly but in a very nice and controlled way. Amazingly, this isn’t as roasty as some impys I’ve had, which would tell me that the predominant malt in here is chocolate. The roast intensifies into the finish, when the dark fruit flavors lurking beneath combine with the resurgent alcohol to remind me of cough syrup without actually tasting like it. I guess you can’t get away from that when the beer is this strong. A sticky, oily mealiness emerges at the very end of the finish with some persistent malt sweetness that is nice. This is quite a triumph, and I’d rather sip this than any other comparably proofed alcohols, but in objective tastes and mouthfeel, give me a regular old 10-12% abv impy any day. This does get better as you get used to it; the syrupy intensity fades and the plum/prune fruit dominates and reminds me of a more intense version of Samichlaus. Also, I could be numb by then. Re-Rate: 4.2. 2001 release. 12 oz. bottle into tulip glass, The Friday imperial stout tasting (beer #40). Black opaque inky in the glass with a nice head for the sample size. Malty and alcoholic nose. The alcohol was very well hidden in the mouth, however, better than all the other WWSs. Liquid dark chocolate with deep plum flavors, a bit of subdued alcohol sting/dryness in the finish. Wonderful beer.

Poured a dark black color, aromas of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, and booze. Flavoors are same, a little boozy aftertaste, but nice. Would be good to sit on a year to make more of the flavors shine vs the boozy aftertaste.

Just had this on tap at ØL Beer Cafe in Walnut Creek. (A)Pours a beautiful lightless black with just a touch of head in a tulip. (S) Lots of roasty chocolate, and dark fruit in the nose. (T) Roasty and chocolate up front with some chocolate and vanilla after. Finishes smooth with just a hint of alcohol. (P) Fantastic, smooth and creamy. (O) One of the best Imperial Stout’s I’ve ever tasted.

Bottle. 2010 d. Aroma smells like wort. The alcohol is there. No head no lacing. Awesome stout but this is for a cigar and to get drunk. Palatable but tastes like wort on steroids.

Poured into my bruery tulip. Black with a two finger head great lacing throughout, beautiful beer. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee and sweet dark fruits. Taste is sweet and hot but not too much so. Great flavor but I think it would be even better with a couple years. Mouthfeel is pretty good, a little thinner than expected but not bad.

A -Pours a dark brown-black color with a thin layer of frothy chocolate colored head atop. The head fades down fairly quickly leaving behind a bit of lace.
S - Aroma is full of lots of roasted and burnt chocolate and caramel malts with coffee and a bit of dark fruit, licorice, and a good amount of booze.
T - Starts off with some rich dark fruit and chocolate malts with some coffee and licorice flavors. Through the middle, some more roasted flavors come through with some more coffee, booze, and vanilla, and some more dark chocolate flavor. The finish is a mix of dark chocolate, dark fruit, coffee, licorice, and booze.
M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and thick with a warming and sweet finish.
D - Pretty drinkable. Really big and huge with lots of chocolate malt flavor. The overall balance is nice with a good level of smoothness considering the 18% abv.

Wow! This beer is intense. It was down pouring outside in a little pub. This beer was perfect for that. But the high alcohol content will knock your socks off.

Wow is this rich. Very strong alcohol presence. Immediately the sweetness hits you, and it is almost too much. And this is all while cold! The roastiness and chocolate comes through in the middle and lingers to the very end.

Bottle thanks to cbkschubert. Please God...make them sell this stuff in Texas... Almost black with a somewhat short-lived soapy beige head. Scattered lacing. Aroma of roast, raisins, light alcohol, wood, chocolate, coffee and vanilla. The taste is decadent. Super rich and roasty, sweet and fruity, chocolaty, a little boozy, and a little bitter at the finish. Full bodied, smooth and creamy, a touch tingly on the tongue and dry. I love it! Awesome send Craig. Thanks again!

Bottle shared by RasmusOtt, thanks. Dark brown pour, a small head that goes away fast. Aroma is packed with dark malts, cocoa, chocolate, sweet coffee liquor, dark fruits, chocolate truffle, a hint if vanilla and oak - nice aroma. Taste is very sweet and malty - dark fudge, chocolate, coffee bitterness, a good deal of alcohol heat and bite as it goes down. Well balanced, but rather hot. Decent carbonation considering the abb.

Pours almost black with a brown head. Aroma is obviously some alcohol, raisins, coffee, rather sugary, dates, figs, rich chocolate, vanilla, dry dark fruits and overall with a pretty nice balance between the sweetness and the booze. Taste is sugary, big booze, chocolate, dry alcohol, dark dried fruits, chocolate and vanilla. A bit too much here but overall pretty good!
