Aubrey (2614), Denver, Colorado, USA Dec 22, 2002 Updated: May 7, 2008 Years ago a friend of mine got married and brought out a 50-year-old port wine. Apparently, it was worth hundreds of dollars, and I was one of the lucky few to be honored with a glass. I have to say, this beer has a striking resemblance. It is super-thick, oily, soft, sweet and sugary with sugar-coated dark fruit flavors exuding. Very warming, but not as alcoholic as I expected -- especially at 23%! Not nearly as "liquor-like" as Utopia, which is only 1% stronger. Completely different from the 18%. Won’t even try to compare because this is an apple and that was an orange. Really good stuff though. Have a few taking a long rest in my basement. Can’t wait to try the 18 and the 23 in a year or four. Cheers to DFH! MAY 2008 tasting: Pours dark and oily. Extremely aromatic; I could smell it from many feet away. Incredible texture. Incredible aromas. Surprisingly, oxidation seemed negligible. Vanilla, dark fruit, molasses, sweet tobacco, intensely rich caramel and toffee. Other than a warm throat, alcohol was hidden very well. Lip-smacking GOODNESS!
Angeloregon (2002), Portland, Oregon, USA Jun 16, 2008 2001 bottle from Belmont Station (thanks Chris)--Deep brown body with some red tinges. No head. Flavor of a chocolate-malt wine or port. Wicked vinous. Sweet, boozy, complex. Lots of fruits and booze heat. Very interesting. Wouldn’t characterize this as an imperial stout, but ok! hophead75 (1700), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Jun 10, 2008 I think this was shared by Notalush at Paul’s Hoboken gathering, thanks. Dark brown, just about black. Aroma- alot of molasses, chocolate, dark fruits- sherry, alcohol. Taste is chocolate, light roast, licorice, and alot of molasses sweetness, raisins/plums/sherry still somewhat boozy even after 6 years of aging. Very sweet, kind of cloying. jcwattsrugger (4045), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jun 8, 2008 12oz bottle@Hoboken#1-pours no head and dark brown color. Aroma is sweet dark malt-molasses, dark fruit. Taste is dark malt-molasses, dark fruit. Smooth. Minimum carbonation. Rciesla (897), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Jun 1, 2008 Updated: Jun 30, 2008Bottle. This is 6 years old. Black body with small tan head. Aroma is matly caramel, chocolate, creamy vanilla. Sweet with a moderated etoh presence. Still a very solid imperial stout and you have to give it credit for being so drinkable at 23% anyone who tells you you cant taste the booze is full of it though. GriffinAvenue (358), South Boston, Massachusetts, USA Apr 26, 2008 Bottle. Opaque, black motor oil coloring. No head. Grapes, pinot noir hints, tart. Flavorful explosion. Malty, sweet, floral notes. Complexity obvious as is the high alcohol exhale (I could light my breath with a lighter). Overpowering and worth every drop.
