Bottle 750ml. @ PBF 2011

ABV: 6.3%. Clear medium to dark amber orange colour with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, light smoke, light rubber - plastic, light plantains and carob. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, smoke, strange maybe the plantains and carob ! Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20110701]

Clear dark amber beer. Small off white head. Light semi crisp palate. Typical Dogfish Head left field. Sweetish malt and a plantain vegetal edge morphing into bubblegum sweetness. Riding alongside all of this is smoky malt. Any carob is subtle and on the back of the tongue. Sweet! Different! Dogfish Head!

Bottle at DFH Rehoboth Beach, courtesy of tarheels86 - thanks! Dark amber color, large tan head with great retention. Aroma of fried plantains, but I wouldn’t have guessed that if I hadn’t read the description. Taste is caramel, chocolate cream pie, scotch. Interesting.

Bottle at BCTC 2010. Pours copper with a moderate, off-white head. Malty aroma with notes of caramel, nuts and some earthy hops. Has a fairly sweet flavor, with notes of banana, toasted malts and some more nuts. Bodied medium and carbonated no more than any other. The finish is sweet, with some notes of smoke and wood, along with more caramel. Pretty good on the whole.

A: A very nice looking pour--a crystal clear amber color with a fluffy off-white head on top. S: Not a very intense nose, but a bit of smoke and some sweet toasted malts. A bit of fruitiness to go along with some bread. T: The smokiness of the beer really dominates the flavor, and prevents the full enjoyment of it. After the smoke fades, a slight banana/plantain sweetness comes through on the finish. There is a hint of bready malt and some caramel in there as well. M: A medium bodied beer with a moderate level of carbonation. Maybe a bit thin. D: Perhaps a nice idea, and nice of DFH to make this beer for EBF, but not quite what I was hoping for. In any event, I’m glad I got to try it.
