Cask (gravity dispense), St Albans Beer Festival 2005. Beer from this Cornish micro are not often seen away from their home patch. Copper coloured. This one is a new single varietal beer using Suzy hops. It has a most unexpected smoky aroma. Otherwise its slightly undeveloped malt, The hops don’t make much of an impression. Very dry, with nuts and berry fruit. Quite earthy. Long finish again dominated by dry malt and more fruit. Although my notes might not suggest it, there’s quite a lot going on in the flavour that I struggled to define. I’ve not come across this hop variety before but it certainly seems to be from the earthy UK school rather than the aromatic American style. Anyway, it made a pleasant beer.

Bottle conditioned. Golden with a massive head. Very lively. Aromas are dry and lightly woody in a way I can’t identify. Thats new hops for you. Slightly musty with some toastiness. Flavours are dry, biscuit with toast. Musty, yeasty and almost champagne-like. Has some light fruitiness. A decent, very interesting beer.

Bottled.Big head upon pouring which took time to dissapear. The taste it left behind was sulphuric and not very pleasant.Why do so mant bottle conditioned beers fail to even slightly resemble a cask conditioned ale? This one was very poor.

Bottle. The beer is old gold, slightly hazy with a large head. Aroma began with a whiff of sulphur and a touch of yacht varnish and lots of other things that none of the present company could fully identify. The taste is equally indefinite: cabbages, compost, fruit, nuts were all there. The result was not undrinkable, simply rather chaotic and rough and ready. Pleasantly different - a bit like the fine old county of Cornwall really.
