Pours a dark slightly hazy goldenrod color. Small off white head. Flavor is hoppy, sticky sweet hops of grapefruit and pine, lemons and some sweetness (sugary) flavor. Malty body but a more hoppy barleywine. Thanks to CaptainCougar for this one.

Copper in color, medium and soapy head. Super sweet nose. Very sweet and hot with the alcohol.

Big thanks to xmarcnolanx for sharing this rarity. Pours tawny brown with a small off-white head. The aroma has toasty malt, alcohol, caramel, light fruit and a vinegar trait that isn’t sour. The aroma hides the age quite well. The body is thick and chewy with a fair amount of gentle sharp carbonation. the flavor starts out with cobwebs, dry caramel, alcohol and spice. The finish really shows the alcohol. This was good, but probably better a bit younger than it is now.

xmarcnolanx (924) - Kirkwood, Missouri, USA - JUN 28, 2010
ARoma is sweet, caramel, slightly alcoholic, oxidized, and there is some faded hop presence in the form of citrus and pine. Works surprisingly well in this beer. Taste is sweet and slightly citrus. Lots of pine hoppiness for the age of this beer, and the caramelized malt is still bright and fresh. Alcohol is present, but not overwhelming. Overall, a very solid beer that was probably great fresh.

22 oz. bottle shared by xmarcnolanx- thanks again, Marc! The original label was gone or was never there in the first place, and it was marker handwritten onto a piece of masking tape. Marc thought it was about 7 years old. Sure didn’t seem like it, as minimal oxidation had set in. Notes of honey, brown sugar, cherries, fruity nectar, and booze. I had no idea what the ABV was, but 10% seems about right. Medium-full bodied, with low carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. Glad I got to try this now long-retired beer.

Nena (963) - Seattle, Washington, USA - JUN 12, 2010
Smells a little dusty, with sweet toffee notes. Surprising amount of mildly citrusy hops appear on the finish considering the age of it. This has a butterscotch and brown sugar malt body to it, mild fig/date notes and vanilla. A good, smooth classic barleywine. Has a little heat on the finish. Glad to have had the experience of trying this.

SpringsLicker (2546) - Tennessee, USA - MAY 10, 2010
A fleeting tan head that slips into a murky medium brown body. Mellow dark fruit and caramel - vanilla aroma. Complex flavor that is slightly sweet with mellowed hops. Sad that Dogwood had to fold just when it was starting to really brew some interesting beers.

UPDATED: MAR 29, 2010 Hazy amber in hue. An extremely vigorous pour yields a thin, tan head that quickly falls to a minimal ring. Nice caramel malts on the nose, and the hops have mellowed to a sweetened citrus zest. Flavor follows suit, and there is just enough soft carbonation left to keep it lively. Mouthfeel is slick and oily, with the caramel giving way to a ’candied grapefruit’ hop finish. Good barely wine that has held up well and mellowed nicely over the years. In a way, this reminds me of Terrapin’s Big Hoppy Monster (sans the weird vegetal essence that I got from that one). I am really excited to have been fortunate enough to try this one. What a great treat. Thanks, Jay!

Pours hazy amber with little head, from 2007 bottle unlabeled. Aroma is thick malt with a bit of hops, taste is citrusy up front with thick malt caramel that finishes sweet with a bit of bitter. Very good barley wine!
