3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 wpp83 (64) - Athens, Georgia, USA - AUG 31, 2004
Poured that most tantalizing of Stout hues, Black (capital to express the sheer blackness of the pour). The head was a medium tan head. The beer had a wonderful aroma of roasted malts. The beer tasted wonderfully, with a strong coffee flavor (that nice roasted bean flavor) with a mildly hoppy after taste. Wonderful beer.

Bottle courtesy of CaptainCougar. Rich roasted malt aroma. Little hints of whiskey???? Deep black color with a bit of reddish hue. Really no head to speak of. Rich and smooth mouthfeel. Dry indeed. Very malty with chocolate and deeply roasted grains dominating the flavor. Nice light hops in the finish. Really delightful.

Bonus ’03 bottle from shp555. Wow, thanks. Pours deep brown with an unexpectedly huge head but little retention. No lacing to speak of. Aroma of chocolate, dark malts, coffee and a bit of dark fruits. Tastes mostly of choffee. Slightly bitter finish. Extra fizzy carbonation. This held up amazingly well.

Kudos to BeerCellar2 for the brew. Pours black, small head, goes quick. Malty and sweet. Really improves as it warms. I like!

Pours out of a 12oz single a solid black, impervious even to direct light. It took an aggressive pour to get out even the meager off-white head it provided, what is there sticks firmly to the glass. Mocha and roasted coffee beans are heavy on the nose with a slight, vague fruitiness present as well. Smell is awesome. Mouthfeel is a bit lighter than I expected. Nice taste, sweet up front, roasty in the middle with light pangs of bitterness at the end. Very refreshing for a stout, almost pushes itself into "session" territory.

UPDATED: APR 23, 2008 9/04/2006 Bottle from BigSilky’s first trade! Thanks! Nose is of coffee, cocoa, and a little molasses; opaque brown with cherry showing along the edges, a small tan head; flavor is primarily roasty coffee, body thin, and a bit of biterness still showing inthe finish although the bottle was obviously old (best before date 7/21/04). And I still have three more bottles! 7/4/8/3/15 3.7
4/23/2008 another bottle from the same batch; Nose of coffee and chocolate; black with a small cinnamon head; exceptionally smooth and unoxidized for such an old lower ABV Stout; flavor is coffee, chocolate, and a bit of peppery spiciness in the finish. Body a little thin but a very good beer! 8/3/8/3/16 3.8

Very dark brown color with a brown head. Dominant coffee bean in the nose with some fudgey/choclatey notes. Hints of light roast and fruit also present. The body smooth, just a touch of slight iron at the beginning before moving onto better things. Coffee notes and a light hop bitterness fill the middle and end. Lacking in the area of roast I though, but otherwise a nice aromatic stout.

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2004 This beer ages very well. Had my second bottle after 5 months of aging. Deep black pour with a tan head. Strong roasted malt and caramel from the aroma. Tastes of dry malt. Pretty good for a micro! Very impressive.

Beautiful opaque black with a tiny tan head. Roasted coffee nose with subtle hints of fruit and molasses and a touch of chocolate. Good feel in the mouth. The flavor did not live up to the aroma but wasn’t much off. Still that roasted coffee essence with touches of molasses and friut and chocolate. A very nice stout.
