another nice pale ale from old dominion brewing co. not as hoppy as most american micro brews (surprise), but still very hoppy and tasty.

ok malt balance.
But pretty unexiting.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 pivo (2540) - GERMANY - FEB 21, 2005
TAP: light pleasant nose, pale amber color, low frothy head. Toffee tastes with some butter peeking through the toasted malt body. Grainy, nutty finish. Some hops, but reserved bitter. Medium body. Typical, average U.S. microbrew ale.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 mctous (131) - Herndon, Virginia, USA - FEB 4, 2005
UPDATED: FEB 19, 2006 Pale malt dominates the aroma and flavor, with a short-lived carbonation, a gentle PNW hop finish, and a gentle diacetyl yeast signature. Decent but not distinctive.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 BassMonkey83 (16) - USA - FEB 3, 2005
Sweet/citrusy aroma with a pleasing mouthfeel. Malty flavor with a mild hop bitterness towards the finish. Goes down very easy and, oddly enough, goes well with dark chocolate...but that’s not important right now. It’s a very drinkable ale at a good price, it’s just lacking "kick". Not mindblowing but a great effort
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 meathookjones (245) - Sterling, Virginia, USA - JAN 12, 2005
This appeared a light amber hue with excellent clarity. The head was about an inch high and off white. It dropped down to a cap of bubbles fairly quickly leaving some lacing around the glass. The smell is a little weak with a sweet maltiness coming through and a hint of earthy tone hops. The taste starts of with a pleasant fruity sweetness with notes of caramel before becoming slightly bitter from a decent amount of citric hops. Very balanced and pleasant flavor that is not too sweet or over hopped. Mouthfeel is light to medium with sufficient carbonation, though I wish it had a little fuller feel to it. Drinkability couldn’t get any better, a pleasant decently complex taste that goes down smoothly. Very sessionable as I have done it on many occasions.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DarkElf (2938) - La Jolla, California, USA - JAN 10, 2005
(12 oz bottle, obtained in trade with jasonp, thanks Jason!) This intriguing beer has a very strong buttery flavor, like eating a slice of Buttertop bread. It’s also malty, bready and toasty, but wow, it’s extremely buttery in the flavor, nose and mouthfeel. Mild hops bitterness lends some balance, but this is very much a malt dominated beer. Light amber color and slightly hazy in appearance. Off-white head exhibits average size during the pour and gradually recedes to a rim of tiny bubbles around the edge of the glass. Lacing is sporadic and fairly insignificant. Very unusual beer in a category filled with many ho-hum beers. As with most Dominion offerings, I’m enjoying this one a lot.

From a 12 oz. bottle. Pours a light orange-amber with good head retention. Leaves great lacing. Aroma is almost all hops. Flavor is malty with overiding hop flavors, is nice with spicy foods. Palate is on par with the style. Pretty good, but the hops take a little getting used to.
