COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We celebrated our ten-thousandth batch of beer with Dominion Maniacs, a Belgian-style tripel brewed on April 10, 2002. Only 63 kegs of this very special brew were produced. Maniacs will be sold only on draft at the Old Dominion Brewpub. Tripel is a style of ale first produced by the Westmalle Trappist Monastery in Belgium. Tripels are notable for their creamy head, herbal aroma, firm maltiness, dryness, fruity-yeasty palate and clean finish. Maniacs was formulated by Old Dominion brewers Derek Bailey and Bernie Van Order in the classic Belgian style, from malt, candi sugar and Hallertau hops, with a delicate spiciness due to the addition of small quantities of Curacao orange peel and coriander. The beer was fermented with an authentic Belgian abbey ale yeast. It is spritzy and somewhat dry, with a touch of candy sweetness in the background. The straw-colored brew is unfiltered.

Good god the alcohol. Not much on hops, but not supposed to be. Very light body. Where is the alcohol coming from? Noticeable belgian white flavors--spice wise. I like it just for the buzz. :)

Hard to find good tripels, but surprised myself by really liking this one. Very spicy, lots of zing. Plenty of orange peels, coriander, and yeasts.

How they put this much alcohol (9%) in such a light beer is beyond me. Pale yellow body, OK head. Light wheat aroma, slightly fruity. Seems almost hefe in taste -- sweet malty, wheaty, easy going with decent spicy aftertaste.
