4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 Sully (1378) - Potts Point, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA - JUL 18, 2005
UPDATED: JAN 9, 2006 Another offering from Phil (Haddon90) on his trip downunder. I poured this into a snifter and was immedately taken by the beautiful rich coppery colour and clean head. The nose is agreeably oloroso like and so the comment about sherry notes are very valid. There is a definite promise of the Alcohol to come as the depth of nose coming from the resinous oak aged character suggests something strong. The flavour doesn’t let you down at all. A rich and warming hit of syrupy caramel, cinnamon and bready notes comes through. This is one of the archetypal winter sippers, in your slippers, what a ripper. Onya Phil.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 PeterA (340) - SLOVAK REPUBLIC - FEB 28, 2004
Bottled Jan. 27, 2003 (yes, 2003). Sweet aroma, caramel, alcohol. Cloudy apple cider-ish color. Not a lot of head. Lot of alcohol in the taste, much more bitter than I would have expected from the aroma. But this bitterness fades as the beer comes up to a proper temperature. As it warms, the apple pie sweetness comes out. This is a very complex beer, and truly enjoyable. Aftertaste is slightly bitter, and mouthfeel is a little bit sticky.

Bottled Jan 27, 2003, Drank Jan 16, 2007. Roger Freiday gave me this many months ago, and I have to say, this is a fantastic flavorful but smooth (probably due to the age) 11.4% beer. I could drink this all day, although I’d probably regret it in the morning. Great with honey in case you’re wondering.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Dough77 (820) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - FEB 4, 2005
My first vertical (even though it was only a semi-vertical gone bad, it was still cool).
’98- Pours out super cloudy orange, tiny white head with a yellow ring around the glass, syrup like. Taste is enourmous, malts, caramel, fruits dark and light, tiny bits of chocolate even peaking through, very very mellow. just a great overall brew
’02-nowhere near as cloudy, alot louder around the edges, very sharp not very mellow at all, but the taste is still phenom. have an ’03 and ’04, but will wait a little while on those...oak aged yet to come later tonite!! looking foward to it.

12 oz bottle with a bottled on date of Feb 19, 2004. Appearance in the glass is a dark amber color with about a half-inch of beige head that dies down quickly to a random scattering of bubbles. Left a bit of lace as well as it was consumed. Sweet malt and fruity notes dominated the aroma. Notes of molasses were present as was a bit of alcohol as this warmed. Sweet tasting upfront and a bit of molasses and alcohol lingering in the background. Also there were notes of dark fruits and a slight alcohol bite on the aftertaste. It was sweet but not cloying as the alcohol and hops kept that in check. Almost full bodied this was rich and coating in the mouth. Tasty stuff that I have drank several of upon occasion and a release I always look forward each year.

Pours a dull hazy brown, with a quarter inch of white foam. This reduces to a ring in a few moments. The aroma is of toffee and brown sugar, with a hint of over-ripe pineapple.
Lots of toffee, caramel, and honey malt goodness. Very good hop balance with lots of resiny, almost oily, piney hops. A hint of orange peel and spicy hops in the finish, with a strong alcohol presence in the aftertaste. Full bodied, and the malt just clings to the roof of my mouth.

bottle. this really reminds me of Bells Hopslam.... its heavy on the honey and grapefruit... really kind of a light Barley Wine or hybrid of a IIPA and a Barley WIne. much hoppier than a true English Style Barley Wine... quite excellent. Pours a deep amber / orange with no head. Huge honey and citrus aromas with a touch of hops..... I just wish the aroma was turned up a bit.... medium body with a spicy front and solid finish which lets the alcohol out a bit... slight burn which lets you know the abv. Wonderful citrus and honey notes with a very well balanced bitterness. sticky and sweet....

Purchased at: The Beer Outlet for $1.25
Aroma is honey, hops and an alcohol burn, inviting, strong.
Visuals are a deep ruby red, lightly carbonated, very quick tan head goes away completely.
Taste is bitter, middling to sweetness, finish is a long bitter burn.Tasty, but unbalanced.
Palate is crisp, rough, and sandy. Gritty, drying, and with an alcohol burn throughout.
Overall, a very nice brew, definitely a different kind of barleywine, this one much less sweet than others, with a great deal of hop presence. Delicious, well done.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 DocLock (5971) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 9, 2005
Found this at State Line in Elkton, MD. Pours a great deep copper shade with medium off-white head. Aroma of big caramel malt, dark fruit, spices, hops. Tastes very fruity, with firm malt, hops, and some cognac at the finish. Smooth, firm mouthfeel, with a great balance and complexity. Definitely in the upper tier of barleywines.

1.16.07 Split bottle with AdamSkillin. Jan 03 vintage. At 4 years old this barleywine is everything a bw should be: rich in taste with a enough alcohol for relaxation. Get this, it’s fantastic.
