Bottle. Complex stout taste with some sweet and coffee flavors. Dark brown, thick, sharp finish but doesn't linger too long.

12 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip. A: Pours a borderline black color, albeit one that lacks impressive thickness. The head is a four finger khaki shade featuring nice retention. The head leaves behind some nice lacing, also. S: There’s a good espresso presence here, but it’s not overpowering or even super-strong. Beneath the coffee notes lie notes of licorice, chocolate, roasted barley, cream, and even some leafy hops. Really damn pleasant, if not massively bold. T: Initially it opens up with some light roasted barley and chocolate. Coffee builds up on the finish and aftertaste, backed by some licorice, nuttiness, char, and even a touch of piny hops. I don’t think the espresso used here is amazing, which is my biggest quibble. Decently deep and enjoyable, though. M: Indeed, this one lacks body. It’s not the driest coffee stout either, choosing to err slightly towards a sweet finish. It goes down superbly, which is my #1 desire for a good coffee stout. O: I don’t think it can compete with WnB or FBS. I do think, however, it’s a solid alternative, and a superbly priced one at that. And it delivers the drinkability and the coffee-ness I look for.

decent stout aroma. big black alky laced coffee nastiness. think grampa’s shot or two in his evening coffee. same with the finish. tho it did have a slight milk stout aroma, this stuff is far off from sweet stout. think imperial coffee stout, wew. in conclusion, the label on the bottle is eye candy. looks good, smell pretty good, but what looks and smells like sweet stout is not, near 10% and its completely inyer face.

kramer (3880) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 7, 2013
Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown, almost black body, with a minimal fizzy light brown head that quickly faded to a thin ring. The nose is just bursting with citrusy coffee and roasty maltiness. Smells like it’s pretty dry and there’s zero alcohol noticeable. The flavor is driven mostly by the coffee, which is very well done, it’s lightly citrusy and the bitterness is kept completely in check. Some slight sweetness below the coffee, but it’s not clingy or sweet. Just a nice well rounded coffee stout, I have a hard time believing that this is 9% ABV, there really isn’t any hint of booziness. Medium bodied with soft minimal carbonation. Lingering dark-roast coffee finish. I really liked this one, but then again, I’m kinda a sucker for good coffee beers.

Malty dark coffee and chocolate smell with sweet nutty carmel in the end. Light tannins head and dark brown body. Spicy black coffee with a dry choclate that gets a little hot. Smooth a little carbonated and spicy on the palte. Pretty tasty

I enjoyed this at first, but it grew overly sweet by the end of the glass. The body is jet black with no real head and the aroma is strongly coffee and chocolate and a little vanilla. There’s a slightly boozy quality to the smell, too. The flavor is strong chocolate, and it’s very sweet, but by the end it was far too sweet and kind of artificial tasting. I liked the first half of the bottle a lot, though.

Draft at Surf Taco. The aroma on this is a close replacement to Breakfast Stout. The body was only medium at best but towards the end of the 12oz glass it seemed a tad bit thin, carbonation was a tad bot on the high end to make the body seem even thinner. Flavor was great, basically a cup of black coffee with some hops and burnt toast. Overall this is one solid underrated beer.

Bottle from Total Wine. Pours black with a small tan head that is dissipating fairly quickly. The aroma is fairly one dimensional with a whole bunch of coffee, coffee bean, even some coffee grinds. The taste is pretty similar with a big coffee flavor and some light lactic qualities that give it a nice mouthfeel. Very good brew that could really go somewhere if they added another dimension.. maybe some dark chocolate and even a dash of pepper.

Pailhead (3859) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - APR 18, 2013
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate chocolate/cocoa,light coffee, fruit, and a touch of vanilla. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a one finger beige head that quickly settles to a thin film outlined by a thicker ring. There is some sporadic dotted lacing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate milk chocolate with a touch of bakers chocolate. The finish has moderate coffee, roast, light vanilla, and a touch of fruit. it’s medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a slightly oily texture. There’s no sign of the 9% abv. Overall, it’s a good coffee stout, but stiff competition makes it unlikely I’d grab it off the shelf if a coffee stout was what I was in the mood for. We aren’t talking a world class beer here, but the 3.2 average seems awfully low.

On tap. Pours a dark black with a thin brown finger of head that quickly dissipates. Strong malty aroma with big notes of rich coffee and chocolate. Taste is espresso, roasted malts, and chocolate.
