Draft. Small beige head atop black body with brown edge. Aroma is moderately sweet, coffee/roast, some alcohol/acetone, light bittersweet chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, bittersweet chocolate, some roast/coffee, light earthy/grapefruit, cherry/cherry liqueur. Sticky medium-full body.

Draft. Very dark maroon, thick brown head, solid lacing. Aroma of burnt espresso and dark cocoa. Taste is very roasty and rich bittersweet chocolate.

Tap at Max’s Taphouse. Pours opaque black with a small, frothy dark tan head, short retention with light lacing. Aroma is coffee, earthy and spicy hops with roast malt and raisin notes. Flavor is malt dominant with light hops and bitterness, dark fruity esters and heavy coffee with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Draft at RR Street. Pours hazy dark blackish brown with tan head. Nose was espresso, cacao, black patent and choc malts. Tasted rich, fairly complex, with heavy coffee and chocolate notes, some hops, and a lot of balancing malt. This one is solid.

22oz bottle: Pours a mostly opaque black with a spotty-lacing froth of beige head. Has a sweet toasty dark caramel and chocolate malty nose with lots of fresh coffee. Starts with good fullness and sweet dark malty with good espresso flavor and roasty bitterness before a semi-sweet dark chocolate finish. True to style with pretty good complexity.

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malts and coffee with an earthy note. The taste is chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, faint hops. Finish of faint burnt and booze notes. Medium bodied, well balanced and quite drinkable. A success for these guys which is something I’m not quite used to.

Bottle. Pours black with a very thin tan head ring. Nose of fresh espresso and coffee grounds with some milk chocolate. Taste is mostly burnt coffee grounds, burnt barley and milk chocolate. Lots of burnt malt and burnt coffee. Medium body.

On tap at Churchkey. Dark brown with tan head. Nose of oak, and dark chocolates. Taste is roasty, malts, espresso, coffee and chocolate. Vanilla notes. Milky edges.
