Commercial Description:

As of approximately July 2007 the new ownership of Old Dominion has decided that the actual Oak Barrel version of this beer is not economically feasible. Thus the Oak Barrel Stout that is available at the brewpub is the exact same one that is in bottles.

Aged in used Bourbon Oak barrels, Dominion Oak Barrel Stout is a lovely, creamy dark beer with a hint of chocolate and a distinctive vanilla, oak and bourbon flavor.

Note: aged in bourbon barrels and only available at the brewpub at the brewery.

I first had this beer when it was only made in small batches. It was phenominal! It was a great alternative to Guinness.

Super dark in colour with a thin dark brown head. Vanilla and bbroubony aroma. Chcolate and a bit of bittnerness are added in the flavour. Not hugely bourbon, which is a bit refreshing in the age of huge bourbon aged stuff.

Wow, where are the ratings from the growler at DLD? Please don’t tell me I was the only one to make notes on this! Thanks to whichever Virginian brought this: Pours nearly opaque with a small frothy head and some lace and oily tears. The aroma has the expected beautiful vapours of smoke, vanilla, bourbon, mocha, oats, floral and herbal hops. The flavor profile pretty mush followed suit with the nose with a heavy dose of chocolate and black malts supported by herbal bitterness. The oak barrel is really kept in check and accents the flavors adding a nice changing depth of palate. The mouth feel is quite creamy and lush but could have been a tad thicker, a surprisingly dry finish. Mikey likey, the best of the weekend!

Interesting that there is a separate place to rate the draft! We all know the draft is different from the bottle, almost every time. I have had the bottle version of this now lets give the brewpub a chance. Pour is pitch black. Roasted malt, coffee and some chocolate greets the olfactories. Thin creamy tan head. First taste is roasted woodiness. Immediately I think the draft version is about the same consistency as the bottle. Lacing is decent as you drink. The bitterness of this is somewhat difficult to describe. It is not a lingering bitterness but it makes itself noticed on each sip. The carbonation of this brew is flat, just like most of those nitrogen propelled beers. Even a little tinglyness would be welcome. Stout aroma continues thru, with each taste. The finish on this sets it apart from the bottle. The bottle has a continuing bitter finish that lasts, and this finish, tho medium light bitterness, does not linger - it is very much appreciated.
