Dominion Oak Barrel Stout is rich and smooth, a draught brew so popular at our Brewup that we found a way to bottle it for a wider audience. We combine seven different malts and two hops to create a delicious stout, that we dry-hop with fresh vanilla beans and toasted oak to finish our little treasure. The result is a stout that has the bourbon barrel flavor we all enjoy, and hope you will to.

Note: made with oak chips and vanilla beans, not aged in barrels. Available bottled and draft outside of the brewpub.

Bottle from kihoskh, dark brown to black, smooth brown head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel and roasted malts.. notes of vanilla too. Flavor is chocolate, vanilla, some roasted malts, quite sweet and non-bitter , but with quite a lot of flavor. end is somewhat more bitter as wood bitterness kicks in.

Bottle, 6%. Weak metallic and sweet aroma. Black colour. Small tan head. The flavour is weakly roasted, but has more of a teaish hoppiness. Perhaps a little lactose, but I do not get much barrel flavour or even much vanilla. The mouthfeel is a tad watery for the ABV, but the flavour is not bad.

Pours dark amber, nearly opaque. Aromas of caramel, vanilla, and toasted almonds. Taste is roasted malt with peppery hops. Vanilla and wood chip is there but subtly added. Some mild carbonation takes away from what should be a creamier mouth feel. Overall decent but I had hoped for something more.

On draught at Old Dominion’s pub by the A gates at Dulles. Small tan head. Opaque, dark brown. Not a ton of aroma, very mildly oaky. Medium body. Bittersweet. Ashy and earthy notes on finish.

Dark mahogany color, translucent, good legs, dark tan head fades to a little collar, you can smell/taste the whisky quite a bit in this one, smoky whisky was used, somewhat peaty. Strong aftertaste, not the best but OK. The base malts are good, somewhat overpowered, just a little less whisky and i might love it. I like it fine the way it is. Not earthshattering buy nicely done.

Bottle. Almost clear almost black liquid with small light tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate, light oak, light smoke, caramel, dried fruit and light ash. Taste is light sweet and light bitter with notes of caramel, oak, light cinnamon and dried fruit. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Pretty good.

Poured from a bottle. Poured pretty much pitch black. Aroma is strong roasted dark chocolate malts mixed with a good dose of freshly ground coffee beans and vanilla. Taste is similar. Palate is smooth and creamy. Overall good but not great.

Bottle: Deep brown, slight blackness towards the core with a very thin, light-tan coating skimmed across the top. Not robust enough to be called a head, even after an aggressive pour. Kind of bland & mundane aroma, though not necessarily off-putting. Just... eh. Dry cocoa shavings, a touch of sweet cream, dry oak & woodsy notes, a touch of vanilla, & a light hand of roast. Kind of blends in with any other generic stout out there, perhaps with a little more of a woodiness (the oak, duh). The flavor introduces a little more coffee alongside the mild onset of cocoa dust, oak dryness, & roasted malt. Vanilla is almost nonexistent on the palate. Dry woodsy & roasted malt finish. Thin body for the style. Didn’t get any smoke from this (isn’t is made from peated malt?) so not sure what happened there. Like I said, not offensive or bad by any means, just a bit bland & repetitive.
