COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dominion Oak Barrel Stout is rich and smooth, a draught brew so popular at our Brewup that we found a way to bottle it for a wider audience. We combine seven different malts and two hops to create a delicious stout, that we dry-hop with fresh vanilla beans and toasted oak to finish our little treasure. The result is a stout that has the bourbon barrel flavor we all enjoy, and hope you will to.

Note: made with oak chips and vanilla beans, not aged in barrels. Available bottled and draft outside of the brewpub.

Reviewed 12/22/2012. 12 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip. A: Pours a very dark brown color with good opacity. The head is quite nice - a two finger khaki color with a fantastic fluffy texture. It’s also slow to recede, though I’m a bit let down at the lack of significant lacing. S: There’s quite a lot of dark chocolate and vanilla in the aroma. I can also pick up some roasted and smoked malts, a twinge of dark fruits, and mocha. Oaky notes don’t really pop up. Still, a great example of a ’subtle’ aroma. T/M: The front end of flavors are very vanilla heavy, but the sweetness is nullified somewhat by the clean, bone dry finish. This closely resembles an Irish stout in terms of how it drinks. Most of the other flavors pop up as random subtleties - hints of roasted malt, hints of chocolate, hints of smoke - to help augment the primary note of vanilla. This beer generally finishes quick and roasty, with a surge of oak tannins to help give its finishing characteristics. Wow, I’m surprised how much I like it. O: This is one of those hidden gems I regret not purchasing sooner. Hell, it’s available in some GAS STATIONS in VA. A great session stout - think Guinness infused with vanilla, oak tannins, and steroids.

Deep brown/black with a thin beige head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, bready malt, wood, light smokey bourbon - aroma just lacks strength. Taste is light sweet, light sour. Texture could be thicker - slick with light carbonation. Good beer, but could improve in every aspect.

12oz bottle. Rating #803. Dark pour with a small tan head. Chocolate aroma, more on the milk chocolate side with some dark fruits. Nice flavor, mild roast with some bitter chocolate, pretty nice. (2803)

12oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours pitch black with a thick billowy two finger tan head. Outstanding head retention and lacing. Aroma of vanilla and dark roasted malt. Some hints of cocoa and just a very, very faint touch of peat. I don’t get any oak at all. A little bit underwhelming. This same disappointment carries over into the taste. Vanilla and a touch of coffee up front along with a little caramel and peat. No real oak at all in the taste either which is disappointing considering the name of the beer. Very full mouthfeel and a sticky finish. Overall, I was expecting quite a bit more out of this. It taste very much like a run of the mill American stout. Really no oak or smoke whatsoever.

Bottle. Cheers to my first beer from Delaware! Quite a nice one to start on too! Quite a sweet whisky like aroma countered with burnt chocolate on the nose. Much lighter mouthfeel than I expected, pretty smooth and clean milky taste, quite an enjoyable sweet vanilla and chocolate on a hearty sip! Quite sessionable at 5.2%, pretty smooth, but some interesting highlights throughout!

355ml bottle. Dark brown to black with a nice crema head. Nose of liquorice and chocolate. Taste of more chocolate going into coffee. The palate is medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly elegant finish. Overall, a well made stout - didn’t get much or any of the oak I’d have to say.

Bottle from Bodean’s in London. Keeps its tan head very nicely, smooth palate, and a pleasant taste of roasted malts, vanilla and smoke with quite a dry finish. Really enjoyable stout.
