4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Reviewed 12/22/2012. 12 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip.
A: Pours a very dark brown color with good opacity. The head is quite nice - a two finger khaki color with a fantastic fluffy texture. It’s also slow to recede, though I’m a bit let down at the lack of significant lacing.
S: There’s quite a lot of dark chocolate and vanilla in the aroma. I can also pick up some roasted and smoked malts, a twinge of dark fruits, and mocha. Oaky notes don’t really pop up. Still, a great example of a ’subtle’ aroma.
T/M: The front end of flavors are very vanilla heavy, but the sweetness is nullified somewhat by the clean, bone dry finish. This closely resembles an Irish stout in terms of how it drinks. Most of the other flavors pop up as random subtleties - hints of roasted malt, hints of chocolate, hints of smoke - to help augment the primary note of vanilla. This beer generally finishes quick and roasty, with a surge of oak tannins to help give its finishing characteristics. Wow, I’m surprised how much I like it.
O: This is one of those hidden gems I regret not purchasing sooner. Hell, it’s available in some GAS STATIONS in VA. A great session stout - think Guinness infused with vanilla, oak tannins, and steroids.

Very dark pour from the bottle at Dulles. No head to speak of. Not much aroma either. But the flavor really kicked things into gear. Chocolate and burnt toasted flavors. Very tasty stuff.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from Barleyshops in Congleton. Black with a light brown foamy head. This has a good nose on it, light roast with vanilla and acidity. Smooth and tasty. Vanilla notes, oak (what a surprise), malty. Pretty good, that a little to acid for me and not enough chocolate.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle in Baltimore. Brown pour, almost no head. Aroma is roasty, loads of caramel, vanilla, chocolate and some sugary malts. Flavor is quite smooth, slightly roasty, quite sweet and with a decent body. Somehow has all the ingredients for an epic stout, but isn’t it. Might be that the oak and vanilla seem a little forced on this one.

Draft at IAD. Pours very dark brown with a fizzy beige head. Tastes like sweet chocolate malt, roasted, molasses, and dry earth. Light/medium body and low carbonation. Smells like chocolate, molasses, syrup, and roasted malt.

Got a ton of oak on this one. Otherwise, not much to speak of.. pretty bland. I felt like I was drinking a liquified version of an old bookcase.
