4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 roomtempbeer (185) - Franklin, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 25, 2003
I notice beer is a twist-off, but I pop anyway. Beer pours (in Chimay glass) a dark brown, near black liquid that, when held up to light, can be seen through with small head that dissipates quickly to nothing. Aroma is of black licorice jellybeans, very sweet and an ever so slight hop. Flavor is an oh-too-sweet licorice jellybean with a small dry ending and an ever-so-slight hop. Hop is barely noticible when sipped, but almost missed completely when taken in mouthfuls. Licorice is not appealing, but anything is better than hops. Sampled at 71 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once bottled, draught only product now found on tap at the brewpub. The recipe has been tweaked over the years, and this is the base beer for Oak Barrel Stout. Five malts are used in the brewing of this beer, including two row pale, carapils, chocolate, caramel, malted wheat, and an addition of roasted barley which is not malted. This beer is hopped with two varieties, Perle and Willamette. That is an awful lot of flavor packed into a 4.7% abv brew, and makes for a truly fantastic stout to drink on any number of occasions.
Dominion Stout pours to an opaque ink black color with a thick and creamy tan head, and a soft carbonation. The nose is very inviting on this beer. Very robust aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, sweet malt, and slight grassy hop aroma floods the nose. The palate is very soft and full with lots of big malt flavors. Sweet malt, chocolate, caramel, and coffee flavors marry with a slight bit of roast. Dominion Stout finishes with a delicious creamy, silky chocolate/coffee flavor up front, and ends with just a touch of roasty flavor, and enough hop bitterness as to make this beer not too cloying.

Pours a very dark color, almost jet black but not quite. The aroma is of roasted malts with a faint burntness associated with it. Flavor is full of roasted malts with hints of chocolate and coffee. The finish is coffeeish and smooth. Medium body with low carbonation a creamy mouthfeel. Nice stout.

Very, very dark ale. Beautiful, crystal clear, crimson hue when held up to bright light. Small, lightly tanned, creamy head with decent lacing.
Milk chocolate, vanilla and almonds in the nose. Also, lesser notes of coffee and pistaschios.
Well-balanced flavor with lots of cocoa, espresso and vanilla. Very nice, moderately bitter hops.
Medium-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Lengthy, burnt, bitter finish. Great stout!
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 MilkmanDan (1943) - Eagan, Minnesota, USA - OCT 4, 2002
Nose has too much coffee, but most people wouldn’t mind. Me, I hate coffee. For perverts and Commies, as far as I’m concerned. Oh, but it looks good on you. Like the taste of it. Very roasty in the flavor. Taste is more chocolate than coffee. Palate’s a bit thin, but it doesn’t particularly detract from the enjoyment, but instead makes it a bit more quaffable. Very drinkable.
