3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a transparent dark mahogany with a thin-lacing off-white head. Aroma of toasty dark caramel and butterscotch with a touch of graininess. Body starts with some vanilla and dark caramel sweetness with a touch of milk chocolate and some diacetyl notes before a buttery finish. Needs a little more fullness and complexity, without the diacetyl.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle: Thanks TheEpeeist! Pours a ruby brown with a weak fading tan head. Lots of metallic character in the aroma (iron oxide from iron brewing equipment?) Thin, muddled, lightly nutty roast and a licorice touch. Thin bodied, a bit fizzy in texture. Metallic upfront, again. Then there’s a brief crystal malt nutty roast and a touch of cocoa. Low on the hop bitterness- but it does have some saltiness and a roasted barley (husky) bitterness. A bit off in the fore-flavor and lacking body. Not too bad, though forgettable.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
UPDATED: MAR 21, 2009 Big problem with this is the finish reminds me of a cheap pilsner. Flavors are there, but out of whack. Smokey, charcoal, black coffee, but for some reason the flavors don’t really sing together. Just okay. [Update] This is getting worse as I drink it. Its chalky, the roast is turning to burnt, and the drinkability is low. Frankely, its getting sickening. I don’t want this anymore. What should I do? I need the booze, but its grossing me out. Do I throw it away? That means I’ll have to buy more booze...I curse this beer for putting me in such a precarious position.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz bottle
Maybe it was because I drank this towards the end of winter but I did not find it very representative of the style. I am willing to give it a second chance next year thanks to a reasonable price point but it will have to change (or my tastes will have to be different).
Aroma / Appearance - A weak tan head mingled with a fluid black body. The smells of ash, charcoal, anise, and mellow chocolate were easy on the senses. It could have been a bit more assertive as it was hard to figure out what they were trying to do.
Flavor / Palate - Warm but thin the mouthfeel left a little to be desired. The flavors were a smooth combination of smoke, black coffee, anise, and cool rye toast. With a bit more body this would be a great and affordable winter drinker. Instead it is average and tame.
