COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Known Vintages: Winter 2005

The Winter Brew varies year-to-year. The back label should state what style it is, so make sure you rate the correct style!

Designed by Old Dominion brewer Favio Garcia, this winter warmer is a big ale that is lushly hopped with Liberty, Cascade and Centennial hops. Whole leaf Cascade hops are added to the lauter tun. A delicious beer to toast the holiday season

This is the 2005 version. The 2007 version is listed seperately as Dominion Winter Brew 2007 (IPA)

Bottled 111705 drank on 082306: Deep dark cloudy orange with a thin white head. Rich earthy hops in the aroma, with some musty pine, starts and ends bitter, full bodied with a syrupy texture and mild carbonation. Ends with caramel. Well put together and good hiding of the alcohol.

Bottle shared by footbalm, bottled November 17, 2005. Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. The aroma is spicy, sort of buttery also. The flavor is nothing like an IPA, more bready, buttery, sweet but lightly bitter also. Odd glue like maltyness, not good. Maybe way past its prime. A thin mouthfeel. Perhaps it’s not fair to judge this beer currently in comparison to fresh, so I’m taking that into mind.

Nice deep copper coloured body with a perfect sized dense slightly-off white head. Perfect look! Aroma of nice piney hops with a good spruce scent and a long-lasting caramely maltness that lasts throughout the scent. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong sweetness up front with much more malt than hops and a good dose of spice. Aftertaste shows even more sweetness - caramel, toffee and even more caster sugar. Overall, a nice winter offering - each of the Winter Brews are good to try. A bit lacking in the hops, but the malt and sugars help this one out. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle given to me from my friend Phil (haddon90) on 24-February-2006.

Part of a New Year’s Eve vertical tasting that featured 3 years of Winter Brew. This is the best of the 3. Starts out with a BIG hoppy aroma, but with some good balancing malt, and perhaps hints of vanilla. Flavor is malty with a strong hop backbone. Really nice balance between the malt and the hops. Finishes very roasty, with some hop and raisin notes.

Tap at RFD Washington. Clear bright red pour. Sweet and gritty aroma of almonds, white cake batter, and cotton candy. Pasty and almost abrasive with little balance of bitterness. Slick crystal flavor; grapefruit iced tea with sugar. Plenty of biscuity starch with honey and brown sugar. Quite dark altogether and thick with bready, english style malt construction. Sweetly rendered, with strange, offensive encroachments of wild rice and dog food creeping in with the slightest increase of warmth. Medium to full bodied palate; very dry. The finish extends itself lazily, letting the degenerative dryness of rice and singed grass dominate the more pleasant tones of bitterness. Candied lavender brings it back a bit at the very end. Not bad, really, but definitely purposeless within the field.

A winter IPA, and a fairly interesting concoction. The particular combo of hops used here - along with the pronounced sugars - puts this one about halfway to scotch ale. But it’s the citrus tang and the faint acidity that keep it closer to the advertised style. Toasty and satisfying, with that ubiquitous Dominion flavor profile, this is a worthy effort.

Bottle (brew date 11/11/05): Pours a murky copper/orange color with a thick beige head. Nose is decidedly sweet, with caramel, citrus hops, and toffee. A very wet mouthful with citrus notes, caramel, more sugary sweetness, and a hops bitter tail. There is something of a candylike feel to this ale; I know what you’re thinking and no it’s not like Skittlebrau. A lingering sugar holds on after the hops in the tail. Very different and very tasty. Could it have something to do with the age of this? I don’t know, but I’d certainly have another.

November 29 2005 bottle date. Beautiful reddish-orange brew with average size foamy beige head. The aroma says IPA, cascade hops gallore. Deep bitter hop flavor, very fresh. Finish is piney, semi-dry, beautiful IPA.

11.17.05 Bottled. 8.23.06 Drank. Cold 12oz bottle: Dark amber color with small amount of ivory froth around edges. Aroma of pine and cinnamon. Tastes dry, multi-bitter, with a sweet note to it.
