3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
July 8, 2011 - with blankboy, JoeMcPhee, jerc and mabel. 375ml corked & caged bottle c/o JoeMcPhee. Gushed all over the place. Murky brown with a huge delicate fluffy tan head. Extremely yeasty/funky, but it’s also redolent of sweet spicy caramel malt, almost like golden syrup - dryly floral as well - almost 8/10. Tastes a little sweaty and pungent, floral - interesting mineral/earthy/iron taste elements emerge through the yeast and sweetness, and it has some alcohol - the malt is quite muted, and dry spicy bitterness begins to dominate as it warms up fully. It’s thick, modestly carbonated, and it has some light astringency from the dry sharp yeast (and, I guess, dry floral/herbal hops too) - it starts malty and finishes dry and bitterly floral. I like it, even with the odd mineral bite to it.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 12/20
The cork might still be flying and the bottle would still be gushing. Probably lost 4 oz of this. Murky brown, puddle water appearance. The nose shows some yeasty notes and some esters. Medium to full bodied, with prickly carbonation. The carbo offsets some of the pit fruit flavors and this shows some mushroom notes on the finish.

2.8 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle: Poured a cloudy muddy brown with very little head and slight carbonation. I’m not going to lie - this beer smelled earthy, almost manure like, probably from the yeast. There was a tiny hint of the sweet malts in the nose but not a totally pleasant aroma. I wasn’t expecting very much after that but was pleasantly surprised by a light to medium bodied beer with a slightly sweet taste, almost doughy in nature. There is some hop balance but the hop character is really overshadowed by the reintroduction of the yeast characters. Overall this is an ok beer but not for the faint of heart and certainly not something I could drink much more than 12 oz of at a time. If you are in to funky yeasty beers [and I am not] this might be worth a try.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft at the Birch. Dark and roasty with a nice airy head. Minimal initial aroma, maybe with just a bit of spiciness to tease. Drinks with a light cocoa roast and moderate toffee finish. Easy to drink, pretty much unoffending in any way. (#4692, 7/14/2012)

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Corked demi bottle from Bier Tempel, Brussels
Explosive bottle; eye damage was avoided; pours a giant beige frothy head, and a dark brown murky color; the bottle keeps gushing. Mild aroma of malt and vegetables. Caramel flavor, dryish, although the body is correctly strong; also presence of liquorice, vegetables and alcohol beyond the amount declared. Some sweetness in the final appears later. Probably a decent beer elsewhere, but this bottle is off.
