375 ml. green bottle @ ’t Antwaerps Bierhuiske. I have been morbidly curious about this one because it just sounds like a terrible gimmick. I like raw chicory but not cooked plus it just sounds like he put it in here because he had it growing on his farm. The label makes a different argument, sitting the prosperity that chicory brought to his youth & chicory based dishes in his youth. Yeah, chicory is definitely featured in traditional Belgian cuisine in case those things sounded odd to you. It comes to say that this one was a big surprise, really, really good & fulfil the promise of the potential flavours & qualities the Hof ten Dormaal brews have been hinting at me for some time now, finally coming to fruition. Cloudy golden with a white head. Dominated by the typical Hof ten Dormaal “other” grains / apparently barley showcasing itself at its best, spicy with love esters, great yeast with some caramel sweetness blended in towards the end, I can pick out sweet (not the bitter parts) of chicory if I try, maybe, herbal, sweet malty, touch lemon maybe a vague vegetable thing. Fluffy, well carbonated saison body, brilliant stuff. Love it a lot.

From 37,5 cl bottle. Tasted many times. First name: Winter 11. A hazy darkgolden to amber color, with an off white head. Aroma: fruit, yeast, malt sweet, alcoholouch. Medium body. Taste yeast, sweet (caramel), nice bitter. Dry and bitterness ending. WELL DONE. Original brew.

@bartlebier’s weird beer tasting/Bierhandlung/Mai16; partly due to my scrawly notes, partly due to not being able to pin down the components of this extraordinary taste profile, I just can say this beer is one of my favorites. Surely not for its damp cellar and horses-in-the-rain aromas, although they play a certain role. Also not really for its onset of nicely spiced Leberwurst with some lactic and barnyard hints. There’s just more to it.

375ml bottle, as Winter 11. Hazy golden tan, pungent funky aroma, very fresh, world class. Creamy, yeast, very well balanced. Excellently drinkable for the ABV. Truly exceptional, a treat for Madtown. Golden Ale with more depth.

batch E!022 This beer was a treat, a nice deviation from what US brewers are doing these days, and I welcome it. The beer is a lovely grain color with a strong finger or two of white foam and spotty lace. The smells are grainy (in the farmy way, fresh and sweet), grass, yeasty, and there is the slightest indication of tartness. I get a hint of pear on the nose. The flavor follows through and offers a nice bite behind my jaw of tartness, but this is short lived. Quickly a nice, sweet wheaty tone comes through and again the pear flavor is present for me. As the beer warms, I get really nice white wine notes (particularly reminds me of naked Chardonnay). A sincerely lovely beer. Thin bodied with lower carbonation and a semi dry finish. I would offer this beer to many wine enthusiasts I know and expect that there would be a significant appreciation for the beer. A wonderful, insghtful and innovative beer for the US. (Bottled, 0.375l) Hazy golden with a largeish, cloudy head. Delicious, freshly hoppy nose with Belgian yeast and pale maltiness, brings Saison Dupont into mind instantly. Flavor is also crisply herby-hoppy with lots of yeast fruitiness and some alcohol burn before pouring the yeast. Medium body, quite foamy CO2. Very nice, saisony strong ale, but could show a bit less alcohol. 4545

Keg @ The Black Heart, Camden. Pours hazy yellow, beautiful vanilla aroma. Juicy tropical fruit, spice, yeast and vanilla farmhouse flavours.. very thirstquenching for the ABV, or perhaps it was just a long hot day!

The chicory tast is so fine in this beer! The first time i tasted it i buyed a whole box of it. It comes in geuze bottles (37,5cl) He had used burned chicory in the place of bitter hops. it’s a nice twist! Andre (the brewer) has planted hopranks on his own land so he will use all of his own products to make beer.
