Smooth with a hint of red, an easy drinking beer of character with a rounded fruitiness giving way to a hint of blackcurrant, liquorice and toffee.

Bottle. Brown with a presence of sulphur and slightly acidic. Probably pleasant in cask form but drinking it from the bottle was distinctly unpleasant.

Cask conditioned handpump Wig & Pen Northampton 01/05/12. A classic brown coloured beer with a whitish head. Some red fruits in the aroma. Malty and leafy in the mouth. Pretty sweet but a nice body and actually quite tasty.

Cask-conditioned at the Three Tuns, Bristol 12/05/2011. Deep amber with a slight white head. Sweet, caramel and berry fruit aroma. Flavour had some toffee, doughy malts and redcurrants, before a bitter finish with a touch of citrus hop. Good.

Cask, gravity, at the Pig ’n’ Falcon, St Neots, Cambridgeshire, in the Bank Holiday Extravaganza Beer Festival ’11. Amber with a small white head. Earthy malt aroma. Grassy malt taste with some liquorice but no trace of the promised blackcurrant. Mid bitter finish. I liked this, and noted it was going down particularly well amongst the assembled company. Nevertheless, I have to say that this brewery has some of the most stupidly named beers in history. I don’t find any of them at all amusing. So there.

Bottle conditioned, 500ml from Phoenix Wines, Swanage, Dorset. Amber with white head, sl clouded. There are issues again with the Bottle Conditioning, this is a sweetish, slightly fruity, malty bitter, caramel background. Just a little dull.

Cask, Criterion, Leicester. Amber with a beige foam. Aromas are toffee and weetabix malts. Flavours are sweet malts with ripe pear and spices. Creamy and sweet with light pine hops. Has a decent bitterness.

Cask (Ye Olde George Inn, Christchurch) - Amber with mild carbonation. Fruity aroma with some hoppy grapefruit notes. Hoppy taste with grapefruit, caramel followed by a bitter and fruity finish.
