Sampled at Strong Ale Fest 2004. Didnt enter the rating sooner due to the fact I didnt think it would be considererd a seperate beer. To much goign on here. A beer that was already pretty extreme is pushed over the edge by the whiskey barrel aging. Over the top hops bludgeoned by harsh bourbon notes with oakiness that would be overbearing in any beer but this. Put this under MAYBe try again.

[2013 Southern Charred] Murky golden brown color with a small, light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel, sherry, vanilla, wood, nuts, and bourbon. Taste of caramel, nuts, tobacco, wood, vanilla, bourbony alcohol in the finish.

2016/05/01 - Southern Charred 2015. Pours a ruby brown with a thick, frothy, khaki head that slowly reduces. Aroma is toffee, oak, roasted malt, vanilla, brown sugar, light molasses and a hint of bourbon. Taste is sweet toffee, molasses and vanilla, with a roasted malt base and an oaky/bourbon, lightly herbal hop finish. Super smooth. Mouthfeel is full and oily, with creamy carbonation and a bittersweet, warming finish. The bourbon barrel aging really mellows the aggressiveness of the regular Double Bastard. Awesome stuff. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottled, labeled as Southern Charred (2015 version). Dark maroon with a thin, medium tan head. Aroma of brown sugar, molasses, moderately charred oak - very rich! Heavy malts dominate the flavor, though subtle leathers and pine sap trickle through. Finish is where all the whiskey ended up - mildly hot at first but rapidly mellowing. A fantastic sipper.

Bottle. Southern charred 15. Dark muddy brown with dense white head. Wonderful aroma, oak, vanilla, sweet malts, and spirits. Taste is sweet caramel, toffee, mixed in with bitter hops, followed by vanilla and sprit character. Sticky , bitter sweet finish. The barrel treatment has smoothed out the base beer quite a bit, very good.

’15 bottle. The pour is a murky orange/amber, with a thick head at first. The aroma is mostly that of a strong ale with a hint of booze. The taste has a ton of flavor. Not as harsh as I would have thought from the aroma or just from regular DB. The bourbon is light, but compliments it very well.
