2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Beautiful garnet color, but lacking in balance and palatability. The abv makes this beer tempting, but what we're really talking about here is barley wine; great if that's what you're looking for, but calling this an ale is almost a misnomer.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Southern charred 15. Dark muddy brown with dense white head. Wonderful aroma, oak, vanilla, sweet malts, and spirits. Taste is sweet caramel, toffee, mixed in with bitter hops, followed by vanilla and sprit character. Sticky , bitter sweet finish. The barrel treatment has smoothed out the base beer quite a bit, very good.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
’15 bottle. The pour is a murky orange/amber, with a thick head at first. The aroma is mostly that of a strong ale with a hint of booze. The taste has a ton of flavor. Not as harsh as I would have thought from the aroma or just from regular DB. The bourbon is light, but compliments it very well.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
500 ml. aliased version "Southern Charred" 2015 vintage, 12.7%. Foggy copper-brown with a loose but lasting disc of bubbles. Subtler than expected nose has the anticipated notes of earthy maple-vanilla toffee, charred oak barrel and whiskey. Flavors are the same pleasant mix. Medium-heavy body has a smooth low-medium carbonation and hides the abv well. None too complex, but tasty. Dangerously large sips might be taken too easily from this nightcap style brew.
