Big, rich sweet malty nose with buscuit, carmel, a bit of roast, and freshly floral hops on the nose, a bit of a grassy we foliage aroma too. Excellent clear red color, very clear, average head. Terrific malt tastes, everything comming through smooth and clean. Carmel, chocolate, roast, sweet syrupy malt tastes with a fresh bite of hops to finish. Intensely hopped, everything plays its part, beautiful. A bit of black pepper too, wonderful beer.

Being fairly new to Stone Brewing company I'm once again blown away. POured a nicerich amber color...Nose,like it little brother was hoppy and full of citrus...Although this a much bigger beer with some hints of spices and a tart finish. I'm going back for the three litre.

UPDATED: DEC 9, 2003 2003 22oz Brownish/red color with just a touch of tan head. Aroma is malty, with caramel, vanilla present. Flavor has a lot of caramel early on, with a malty backbone and a somewhat bitter (hopy) finish. A great brew.

Wow! What a beer. I don't think I've ever tasted anything like it. Now, I can't say it's one of my favorites (just not quite my thing), but the brewers at Stone definitely know what the hell they're doing. Extemely hoppy countered by extreme sweetness. Absolutely brillant.

2003: i'm not tasting the alcohol, but i sure feel it! thick caramel pour. little head of tight very light brown bubbles. burnt red, caramel body. thick. sweet to the mouth, dark fruits. fresh, rich, over-the-top indeed. left with pine, bitterness, with a hint of saltiness. jeez, this is just great all together. less soy/salt than batch 6000, more powerful than. this is great. i wonder how it will be down the road. one bomber and you're feeling arrogant, fortunately i'm not a bastard. thanks eric!

Bottle pours a red amber color, perhaps garnet, with a decent head and very little lace. The aroma is quite hoppy and with many sugar molecules. The flavor is very malty and hoppy. The alcohol is nowhere. The palate is very rich. Overall, this is over the top and good.

Ruby coloured amber body with a dense tan head. Aroma of nice hops, very strong with showing of rye, caramel and potent malt. Heavy-bodied; Powerful hop taste-large rye flavours with caramel and a bit of spices. Aftertaste actually fairly clean compared to the taste-strong hop bitterness dominates the palate. Overall, just what I was expecting from Stone. A super-hopped-not-well-balanced beer. If you want hype and hops go with Stone-you won't be dissapointed! This one doesn't do it for me, it needs a lot more! I shared this bottle with Haddon90 (Thanks Phil) on 27-November-2003 from which he purchased from Norm's in Vienna, Virginia.

Beer pours (in Chimay glass) a brown, copper-red liquid light can penetrate with a small amount of off-white head that perfectly compliments the beer color. Head dissipates quickly, but leaves a thin film. Aroma is of sugar, some malt, molasses, and hand candy like "rocks" and circus peanuts. Flavor is of overpowering hops ending somewhat, or faintly dry. High alcohol content warms the belly and may be why that taste isn't too unpleasant. Good alternative to wine. Sampled at 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Only my second perfect beer! (The other being Three Floyd's Alpha King Pale Ale). And I just see now that I am the 2nd consecutive ratebeerian to give Double Bastard a perfect score, following my fellow Minnesotan, beermatrix. I have Kinz to thank for sending this doosy via trade! Floral and hoppy aroma. Thick, reddish body with small, light tan head with good retention. Cloudy reddish yellow when held up to light. Although classified as an American Strong Ale, this could pass for a Barley Wine. So good that the 10% ABV is not all that noticeable. Very smooth. I hate to bring up this comparison because of its negative connotations, but the Double Bastard has some cough syrup qualities. Make no mistake, however, this is nothing unpleasant about this beer. It is pure euphoria in a bottle.

Wowee, wow, wow, what a fantastic beer! The beer Gods from Stone have bestowed this upon us for a reason, because to know heaven you must pass through hell! This is pure pleasure and make no mistake you will pay by nights end. Pours a deep firey tawny amber brown, settles a bit darker in the chalice glowing of newly created lava from the earths crust as it procedes to grow a tall, firmly thickened, whipped froth of tannish wonder. Fades ever so slowly like a dieing fire to a thin ring and a hazy skim across the liquid leaving massive sticking amounts of webby laced sheets. Aroma appears stronger then smoke, more like heat from an oven with mounting sweet caramel, lightly burnt, earthy crispness of deep woods pineyness. Malts are king in this world, ruling with a mighty pitch fork that pokes at the hops as if to say "Ha, ha... Try to take my throne you measly weed". Taste is where it leads you down the path of whats about to become a head full of everything thats tempting. Complexing malts are forest fire big, tons of great semi sweet caramel, thick and thicker yet, flowing in and out of scorched and deeply ripe dark fruityness, pineapple, mango, plum, and raisins bursting within with a light burntness touching everything. Its calmingly smooth and far to creamy for such a fire to burn, but yet it does, and it builds with a wind of hops thats burning up brush of small dwindling pine, dried leaves, and wood. Incredibly balanced bitterness is deep and crackly over the musculature of the big boned skeleton of malts. Alcohol never makes its presense felt til it finds its way to the head where it smokes out any notions of all before it. You remember liking this thing you enjoyed the next day but are now lurking around like a zombie wondering how in the hell did I survive such a dance with the flames of a devil. F*cking great stuff!! Can't wait to dance again with this dark nectar, but not any time soon, as not to become a devils second hand. I hopefully have learned my lesson. Why did they have to put this in a bomber? Much like a devil its always tempting you to take more.
