4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: MAR 29, 2009 2003: After a year of missing the brew, its a great friend to return to. I certainyl wish I had saved a few bottle from last year to compare after they have aged a bit, but alas, this is good enough as is.
2002: Aroma is sweet, extremely sweet. Flavor follows similarly, but has the distinctive bastard feel. Foam dissipated almost immediately. Palate has a slight bitterness from the hops, but is followed by smoothness. Definitely drinkable, but strong enough to make you think twice about having a second.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Obvious similarities between this and the original Bastard, one of the best strong ales out there. This was loaded with maltiness that gave way to a full body, but still hopped to hell. This beer is not for kids. At 10% it will knock you down and not even think twice.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2002 Release. This beer smelled just like pineapple juice when I poured it out of the bottle. Frothy head that disippated quickly but left an attractive ring around the glass. Very smooth mouthfeel. Lots of fruit juice flavors, and not just grapefruit. Pineapple, apple, white grape and something darker. Burnt caramel and molassas sweetness. As it warms it mellows into the perfect, seamless balance of hop bitterness and malt sweetness. You are vaguely aware of the alcohol until you go to stand up. A truely great beer.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: NOV 5, 2009 Gorgeous Munich malt, pineapple, and alcohol aromas. Softly carbonated. From beginning to end the flavors are absolutely immense - chock full of pineapple and bready malts to accompany whispers of chocolate and leather before finishing with drops of banana and rubbery textured alcohol. The alcoholic finish is borderline astringent and thus my only complaint. Otherwise a brilliant example. Re-rate: What was once a shining example of brutishness and finesse, is now a flabby alcoholic underattenuated joke of a beer. Last good batch was 2004 which is when it was lusciously malty with bright and juicy hops. Undrinkable anymore.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Nice deep red color with a diminshing, tan head. Minimal lacing.
Lots of sweetness in the nose with tiny hint of hops.
Malt and syrup in the flavor. Could have used a few more IBU to balance all of the malt.
High alcohol is masked well.
I’m sure a higher rating would be warranted if I had this on tap. AB is better on tap too.
