COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a lacerative muther of a beer. The evil big brother of Arrogant Bastard Ale. It is strongly suggested you stay far, far away from this beer. Those foolish enough to venture close enough to taste will experience a punishingly unforgiving assault on the palate. ’Course there’s always the masochists...

2002 release. I do not like this ale at all. It has no balance and there are 2 things that are overwhelming, the alcahol and hops. Too much for my taste.

2002 Bottle: Well here it is, another highly anticipated bottle from Stone. The beer pours a slightly reddish color. The head has a little bit of a cascade to it. The head is fairly thick, and lingers awhile. Very complex nose: it's hard to distinguish the individual aromas. What is suprisingly not jumping out at me are the aroma of hops. I've come to expect that in a stone brew. The taste is very rich. A huge maly sweetness that I'm sure is balanced by a large amount of hops that are just well hidden. The alcohol is also hidden. I like this more than the Arrogant One. It is even surpassing the 03 Vertical epic to be my favorite Stone!

UPDATED: NOV 8, 2003 (2003 update. This one seems a little more balanced than last year. The flavors are just a complex and the alcohol is a little less prominent. Absolutely Divine!) This 2002 Double Bastard has been sitting in my basement aging for six months - gently, persistently calling my name. Tonight I weakened and brought this muther of an ale up to savor. Wow, it's complex, assertive and definitely not for fizzy yellow beer lovers! This could be classified as a barleywine with it’s high alcohol content and potent malts. But the alcohol is well balanced by the enormous flavors and aromas - a magnificent brew all in all. It all started with a beautiful pour - clear brownish red with a huge, rocky, tannish head which left a nice lacing as it dissipated. The aroma was rich and full of malt sweetness with a balancing hop spice. The flavor was caramel, molasses, and coffee along with plenty of the aforementioned hop bitterness to maintain the multi-prong assault on my taste buds. Though this Bastard taunted and did it's best to overpower me, I found myself worthy of this one and expectant of more. I'm glad that its brothers await me in the basement – gently, persistently calling me to face them again another day…

Geezlepete, this is assertive! Hop flavor dominate at first - Grapefruit, and pinecones mostly. But really, the malt flavor are outstanding. Froot loops, chocolate, butterscotch, toffee, and toast are all prsent and maybe a little freshly mown grass, as well. Very complex, very good.

Great dark amber color with a wonderful head from a bottle pour, very lively. Nice aroma with molasses honey nose. Nice creamy texture with wonderful roasted malt and a slight bitter bite at the end. Really opens up at 58 temp.

Very smooth brew. Very similar to Arrogant, but not as much in your face hops. Beautiful ruby color, and foamy head.

This is a good brew, but quite honestly I like Arrogant Bastard better. Sure, if you are interested in getting your ass kicked, this is a great brew. And it is a fine brew, to be sure, but I prefer Arrogant Bastard.

Aroma is very caramelly and rich, suitable for apple-dipping...Color is a slightly orange-tinged amber--medium cream head and light frosted lace...Hoppy bite comes in first through the flavor door, followed by a robust bloom of those caramelized malts with a pleasant medicinal edge. Hop bitters make an even more impressive reprise in the mouth-puckering dry finish...This stuff leaves an unusual sequence of sensations in the mouth---the initial effervescent bite is washed over by the smooth richness of the main body, which retreats slowly, leaving the aforementioned hop-dryness in its wake---something of a three-movement concerto...No subtlety here, but the flavors are in fine proportion and carried in a body with excellent texture...an unusually successful marriage of intensity and refinement...Double Delicious!

UPDATED: NOV 1, 2004 (2002 edition) Reddish brown color with a huge malt and alcohol nose. Flavor is quite sweet with some raisins, caramel, and cherries. The alcohol is certainly present even at a colder temp. This is one BASTARD all right, it will sneak up and bitch smack you! This may truly be a beer few are worthy of. Not for the faint of heart. (2004 edition) I was unable to try last years but I am really enjoying the ’04 edition. It seems to be more balanced with less alcohol showing than in years past, but that may just be me. This has some barley wine characteristics. The malt does prodominate over the hops but it does have a nice bitter bite to it. A bit of sour fruit, oak, and port wine. Ive gotta up the old rating of 4.1 for this one. Good good stuff.

Ooooh. Look what we can do with hops. Standard Stone fare. At least this one has a modicum of malt to balance it in the beginning.
