COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a lacerative muther of a beer. The evil big brother of Arrogant Bastard Ale. It is strongly suggested you stay far, far away from this beer. Those foolish enough to venture close enough to taste will experience a punishingly unforgiving assault on the palate. íCourse thereís always the masochists...

Pretty damn good beer, the aromas were filled with heavy hoppiness & floral tones, along with a syrup-like hint, the color was of a dark amber, this beer didn't have all that much head, it just pretty much fizzled out very quickly to just a rim around the edge of the beer, the flavors were pretty well balanced, and in accordinace with Stone's lineup the beer was very heavily hopped, dry & bitter aftertaste, all-around a very excellent beer experience

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2003 My only qualm with this beer is that...more is not always better. It is an American Strong ale, and it is an American tendency to want more more more, but when it comes down to it, balance is what really makes a beer good. Although a bit unbalanced, this beer is very tasty and very rich. TONS of barley here, but vanilla and sugar overtones make it rather appealing. There is a bit of an astringent smell, but it's hardly detectable underneath all the barley. Hops take back seat to the huge malt here - very earthy - dingy and sugary, soothing and bewildering all at the same time.

Wow...thats some good stuff. Hoppy scent, but an almost chocolatey taste. Words can't do it justice.

UPDATED: DEC 24, 2007 2007 bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is medium to dark amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel), lightly to moderately hoppy (pine, grapefruit), with notes of sherry, paper, and alcohol. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Man...this was a 4+ beer back in the day, only about 3 years ago. The 2006 batch dropped the ball for me to the tune of 3.3. This yearís is even worse...itís like theyíre not even trying anymore. Clumsy and dull aroma, syrupy sweet mess of a mouth experience. Such a shame.

The alcohol overpowers the other flavors...could be a great beer if it blended into the other flavors better. 2002 Edition.

For a big brother to the arrogant Bastard, this one is much more balanced and very drinkable. I am becoming sort of a hophead and I have Stone to thank for directing me in that direction. The beer has a nice amber brown richness with a gentle hop nose. a well balanced bitterness that leaves you wanting more. If you can get up to go to the frig for another one!

Great transparent blood color, largish immediately dying fizzy head; aroma of smoke, butterscotch, cherries, pinecone-hops. Oakes has it right on the thickness; this is probably the heaviest non-Imperial stout Iíve had, extremely full and intense. Alcohol is a little too evident here for me, detracting somewhat from the otherwise well-balanced fruity/vanilla/caramel flavor profile. Hops strongly in evidence, with a nice long twang at the end. AB is right, this IS a bit too much -- but not in the hops, rather the alcohol. Good, but I think I prefer the "liíl brother".

Though one! Deep amber in color, strong malty aroma with a bitter hoppy sweet malty flavor. Though you can taste the alcohol it doesnít distract too much

Hmm.. Gorgeous color, deep mahogony/red. Head did not stick around long. Seemed to lack the hop assault of the regular Bastard. Maybe Iím just turning into a hophead. Overall a very decent brew. Recommend.
