This is a lacerative muther of a beer. The evil big brother of Arrogant Bastard Ale. It is strongly suggested you stay far, far away from this beer. Those foolish enough to venture close enough to taste will experience a punishingly unforgiving assault on the palate. íCourse thereís always the masochists...

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2004 RateBeer? I donít get it. Shouldnít it be called RateAle? Does Stone Brew make beer now? That would be an absolute travisty. Anyhow... I was looking at how some of the "wussies" describe Double Bastard... like itís some kind of cheap wine. Check it out. Iíve been drinking Double Bastard since 2000. There is nothing "fruity" or "sweet" about it. It taste like it was filtered through a really old sock and I wouldnít have it any other way. Double Bastard F#@king ROCKS! There is no way to really describe it. You must try it or you wonít have a clue. I must say... if you donít like it itís only because your wussy tastebuds canít handle it. Go grab a bottle of "light" beer and cleanse your pallet you wuss! Youíre not worthy!

Deep ruby red in colour topped by a medium thick head with intricate lacing left on the glass. Aroma is malty and fruity with good strong hoppy accents. Flavor is full and complex. Caramel, brown sugar, molasses, grapefruit, pine, pepper and tons of in your face biiterness. Not for the weak or faint of heart.

Dark brown body with purple highlights. Not a whole lot of carbonation, short-lived wispy white head. The aroma has orange dream ice cream along with wheat bread. Big flavor, starts with brown sugar, apple skin, grapefruit rind mixed with the aforementioned brown sugar. The big flavor and alcohol serve to overwhelm the palate, preventing appreciation of whatever complexity might be in there. Or maybe itís just not that complex in the first place, just "big".

2003 bottle. Creamy off-white head that lasts a while... clear deep ruby / mahogany body. Initial whiff of the aroma brought a sweet hoppy and BMW leather aroma. Also seems a bit fruity... like fruity liquor; blueberry schnapps and cherry. Taste is sweet, strong, and bitter. Orange, wood, brown sugar, alcohol. I like the way the alcohol isnít too unpleasant... the hops and sweetness seem to block that nicely, without having it be too sweet.

(Draft: OíBrienís in San Diego, CA) Fairly strong, even for the 2IPA category, this special Stone offering is thick and full bodied, with a strong, sweet maltiness and an aggressive hops bitterness; Very sweet from start to finish, but especially in the finish; Dark red/brown color with good head retention

Dark amber color with a dense white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, citrus and bready malts. Sweet malty flavor up front leads into some notes of fruit and spruce. Hintts of citrus and pine in the bitter hoppy finish. Very enjoyable.

UPDATED: DEC 25, 2004 Now this is an incredible beer. Just found a place that has 8 more of them... almost bought them out. Wonderful hazy-brown color, almost looked like an ESB. Fantastic kick of hops to balance out the inevitable malt in a 10 percenter. Better than the regular... ReRate: 2004 edition, perhaps itís me having had more beers, but now I get the impression that when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. We get it, hops and alcohol, ok, how about a bit of subtlety? I know this beer isnít for those liking subtelty, but still... ReRate (3 Liter 2003 edition): Wow, not nearly the carbonation of the 22oz version. Cloudy, hazy brown color with wonderful aromas of malt, prunes, and maybe olive? Fantastic pour from the liter bottle. Wow. Perhaps this is how it supposed to taste?

To be consumed preferably in small quantities. Extremely rich fruit, raisin and chocolate flavors tempered by well balanced bitterness. Alcohol is quite aparent.

wunderbier (1434) - Tampere, FINLAND - JUN 28, 2004
UPDATED: JUL 11, 2004 22 oz bottle, tulip glass. Bread, cookie, caramel, chocolate malt (H); spruce, citrus (grapefruit/lime) hops (M); light alcohol, raisin, plum, peach, red wine, toffee, brown sugar aromas. Large, creamy, light brown head is well lasting and leaves good lacing. Clear, dark, ruby body. Heavily sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter flavor becomes a heavily sweet, lightly acidic, heavily bitter finish of long duration. Full body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, slightly alcoholic. The bottom line is: excellent malt, wonderful body...acidity and alcohol are my only two complaints (and not big ones in this case).

bitter taste, ameloriated by malt. Crimson with hops suds best appearing in a trappist glass. Floral and pine strong hoppy aroma. Grapefruit mid-sip, cheese aftertaste. Alcohol warming, feels like vodka.. Good with strong meat
