blklab2007 (932), Connecticut, USA Dec 30, 2007 bomber poured a red amber in color fairly thick looking with a one finger head on the pour leaving a nice layer with good lacing at the surface. aroma is caramel malt, sweet fruit, citrus peel, and hops. definitely a big brew. taste is medium mouth feel, good dose of malt with some sweetness, hops come in strong with citrus and fruit, finishes with some alcohol and sharp hop bite. really a heavy hitter, has a great deal of malt giving it a bitter side and a huge wallop of hops providing fruit and citrus combined well. being a 10% brew the alcohol is noticeable but not dominating, sweet but not over the top, and hopped but not too bitter. bottle and labeling are pretty good as an extra. jhumphries69 (717), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Dec 28, 2007 22oz bomber shared with ealdent. Pours a dark, clear brown/copper with highlights of dark amber and a large tan head. The aroma is strong - quite hoppy with some citrus/pine, but also very malty (lots of caramel) with a good bit of alcohol. The taste starts complex with a two-edged bitterness: a hint of roasted grains with a dark chocolate or coffee-like bitterness and a large presence of hops. The flavor is quite reminiscent of the "weaker" version - but sweeter and more alcohol. The middle of the palate detects more roasted grains, some biscuity malts, subtle touches of fruity esters, and hops. The finish isn’t as long as its lowly "arrogant" brethren and is much more warming. The mouthfeel is heavily carbonated (pour vigorously or swirl in glass to release it and to add creaminess to the texture) and medium- to-full in body. Overall, a good beer that is exactly what its name implies. rayOfBeer (316), El Cerrito, California, USA Dec 28, 2007 Poured from tap an amberish brown with off-white foam head. Aroma pounds at you with hops and a caramel maltiness. The taste is a blend of smooth sweetness and hop madness followed by the alcohol warming. This beer held its own. I drank this one after a St Bernardus abt 12 and although completely different the DB has a great taste all to itself. raiderfost (158), virginia beach, Virginia, USA Dec 27, 2007 Wow, what a beer. Pours a mediun brown with small amount of lacing. Taste is sweet and hoppy with a hint of caramel. Very complex. Well done stone. tagz (334), USA Dec 26, 2007 bottle. pours clear dark brown with one finger eggshell head. faint aroma of caramel and hops. taste is sweet mollases with a healthy bitter hop finish. alcohol is warming but hidden behind the sugary palate. some citrus elements in there but doesn’t taste like a standard double ipa. struck me more as a mix between a belgian double and an ipa. the dark malts are dominant but it definitely has a strong bitter finish. its a bit too sweet and syrupy for my tastes. interesting to try. not what i was expecting. Erdinger2003 (127), Ames, Iowa, USA Dec 25, 2007 Head pours out a little thin and there’s a little bit of lacing, but it’s not a real ring. Smell is very good. Sweet, and very hoppy...grapefruity hops, Stone hops ;) Smell has some sweet brown sugar. A blast of floral grapefruity hops that have really great bitterness. franksnbeans (265), Columbus, Maryland, USA Dec 24, 2007 Pours a muddy bronze with a cream head that retains and only gives way to thick sheets of lace. Smells of citrus, hops, caramel, alcohol and spice. Tastes syrupy, dark and dried fruit, caramel, sweet malt, spice and alcohol. Mouthfeel is tremendously smoooth. Wow this brew is a delight and killer at the same time. Hop bitterness lingers on the palate. ABV is present but well hidden behind complexities. What can I say, such an original brew that is a must try. Has barleywine characteristics with strong ale drinkability. Beware.
