If arrogant bastard is a bit one-note, you’d think double bastard would be even more so, but this is a trickier beer than the original, not-born-of-married-stock ale that was the beer that got me hooked on Stone and craft beer in general. This one has some sweetness to counter the harsh bitterness. They is something chemical and off-putting in the aroma that makes this hard to enjoy. It affects the taste as well. The high abv is masked very well. Perhaps I could get used to the off smell, but I am not going to try too hard. Not worth $8 for a 22-oz bomber

Dark amber, clear (hop haze on the bottom of the bottle), small head. Sweet candy in the aroma. More candies in the taste along with good long lasting hoppy bitterness.

This beer is one of my friends favorite beers from one of his favorite breweries. I can see why, we are taking a minute to remember his life with a 2007 bottle. Chocolate, toffee, burnt sugars, and fruity alcohols. This is a style that will always remind me of him. Cheers my friend, may you rest in peace.

3.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Light amber pour with off-white head. Big spruce and citrus aroma as head falls. Hop bitterness is high, but balances well with caramel malt. Impression was almost like bitter lemon curd. Mouthfeel was slick initially, and the medium body lightened by average carbonation. Alcohol taste is not apparent, despite high ABV. Strong bitterness in finish and tongue dries out slowly between sips. Not a hop head myself, but had to try this one out! Recommend sharing this one, unless, of course, you like to burn out on American hops!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled from tap at Stone Garden Berlin. Hazy amber color with medium eggshell head. Aroma is toffee, pine, doesn’t smell that old! Taste is toffee, oxidized (but in the nice way), spruce, resinous. Oily mouthfeel, fine-bubbled low carbonation. Held up way better than expected. Nice stuff!
