Alcohol is present but not overly dominent. Very jealous I didn’t get this @ Coles Shag (1923), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 14, 2003 Updated: Nov 1, 2004(2002 edition) Reddish brown color with a huge malt and alcohol nose. Flavor is quite sweet with some raisins, caramel, and cherries. The alcohol is certainly present even at a colder temp. This is one BASTARD all right, it will sneak up and bitch smack you! This may truly be a beer few are worthy of. Not for the faint of heart. (2004 edition) I was unable to try last years but I am really enjoying the ’04 edition. It seems to be more balanced with less alcohol showing than in years past, but that may just be me. This has some barley wine characteristics. The malt does prodominate over the hops but it does have a nice bitter bite to it. A bit of sour fruit, oak, and port wine. Ive gotta up the old rating of 4.1 for this one. Good good stuff. ucusty (1922), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA

Pours mahogany with tan head and thick lacing. Caramel malts on the nose. Big malty backbone with a blast of hops. Nice lingering pomegranate finish. in my opinion this is the best in the bastard series Kevin (1920), Colorado, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Nov 17, 2004 bottle from Tchrome, thanks a lot man. pours a luscious red with a lingering tan head. aroma is fruity and sweet with an alcohol and hop touch, my esteemed colleague Lumpy says it is cantaloup and i agree. taste is dark fruits and joy, i detect grape, citrus, caramel, chewy earth notes, sweet malt is present but this is a celebration of hops first and foremost. alcohol finish that makes me enjoy the flavors even more. damn this is tasty, i want, no, i need more. marcus (1918), Sacramento, California, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Oct 14, 2004 I had heard so many good things about this beer that I saved it for a few months to drink on my birthday. That was a good decision, since it turned out to be one of the best beer drinking bouts in my long life. Talk about flavor: malt, hops, alcohol, sweetness, fruitiness - this beer has it all, blended together artfully. Afterwards, I took a happy, dizzy nap and woke up ready for another. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 31, 2006 2005 bomber. Deep copper-orange pour with a thin yellowy tan head. Nose hits you immediately - brown sugary malt and citrusy hops. The strength of the malt in the nose is suprising. Initially, the sweet maltiness is there, but is bludgeoned into submission by the bitter flower. Still, the strength of the two flavors is remarkable. Slightly syrupy body, and the alcohol is hidden well - you only know it is there by the warming down your gullet. Niiice. pantani (1902), Salinas, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 23, 2004 Updated: Nov 16, 20042004- Aroma is apricots, peaches, and other dark fruits with a slight touch of alcohol. Very rich and filling, slight alcohol warming to it. Taste is maple, alcohol and fruit.
2003- Extreme maltiness, I’m not one who loves strong ales, but this one was pretty good. Fruity flavor, with some sweet accents.
