COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a lacerative muther of a beer. The evil big brother of Arrogant Bastard Ale. It is strongly suggested you stay far, far away from this beer. Those foolish enough to venture close enough to taste will experience a punishingly unforgiving assault on the palate. ’Course there’s always the masochists...

Had on tap at the Grog. $6 for the full pint. Pours a murky rust reddish brown. Aromas of wet cardboard, grilled corn, strawberry concentrate, DME, flaked barley, mildew, unripe limes, and sweat. Taste the same with the addition of plastic-flavored hops, cabbage, stale orange juice. Extraordinarily bitter at bitter. Strangely fruit-forward, as well. Meh. Not for me.

Bottle: 2010 vintage. A little older than four years. Beaming, semi-cloudy copper body with a lovely, frothy beige head. Nice carbonation, good sign. Aroma has a huge, sticky caramel & toffee profile. Some light earthiness, the hops are still alive a bit, it seems. Faint notes of chocolate truffle, toast, & pine oil. Flavor is like caramel coated hops. Still plenty of earthy, leafy bitterness but with the malt backbone of an elephant. Sticky sweet toffee, light cocoa powder, & a hint of metallic saltiness towards the finish. Lasting pine bitterness with some residual, sticky caramel that coats the palate. No signs of oxidation yet. Heavy, sticky body. Enjoyable, clearly it has held up pretty well for the last four years or so.

Bomber. Wonderful dark fruit and caramel malt aroma with light alcohol notes as well as some grapefruit citrus hops. Pours dark amber with a thin light brown head and minimal lacing. Starts with sweet dark fruit and caramel. Finishes dry but smooth with just a touch of grapefruit citrus hoppiness. Excellent west coast barleywine!

Poured into tulip a reddy dark Amber with Amber head that receded to sides of glass quickly. Limited lacing. Aroma was complex as was the taste. Grapefruit over malt with dark fruits some spice. Just a lot here, this is amazing. Alcohol is hidden mouthfeel is oily. Wonderful.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass; 2013 vintage, bottled on 9/16/2013. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple, pine, raisin, plum, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, biscuit, light nuttiness, floral, grass, and floral/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple, pine, raisin, plum, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, biscuit, light nuttiness, floral, grass, and floral/toasted earthiness. Good amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple, pine, raisin, plum, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, biscuit, light nuttiness, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth and moderately creamy/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome strong ale style. All around great robustness, complexity, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Aroma of hops and some malty yeastiness. Pours a rich amber with a gorgeous foamy head. Taste of hops, bitter pine, dark fruits, malts, resin, etc. A huge beer with tons of complex flavours. (And although the Stone Rep in AB refused to disclose the IBUs for this, I’d guess between 80-95)! ;)

650ml bottle pours black in color with a 2 finger white head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark fruits, chocolate and roasted grains. Taste is a dark fruit and chocolate malty sweetness with a grainy and dark fruity sweetness. This brew is much more complicated than I can describe here. Overall, this is an outstanding brew, full bodied with nice carbonation, well balanced and only for serious beer lovers out there.

Bottle, body the color of new mahogany, skiff of foam, fades pretty quickly. Aroma is malty caramel, raisin, some spruce. Taste is sweet and sharp, malt and spruce and spice, orange/lychee, with citrus rind bitter. Palate is smooth and rich, not overly thick, with fine moderate carbonation.finish is bitter sweet, but leaving an almost astringent bitter taste that lingers too long to be pleasant. Guess I have to keep drinking it.

Pours with a pretty brown orange with light tan head. Pine, fruit, wood. Malt, caramel, more wood and pine in taste. Slightly sweet and boozy. Nice bitter and floral finish. Very enjoyable.

A fantastic beer, so complex. The aroma is sweet and malty , the initial taste is a sweet brown ale, but then come a flood of hops to dry the finish, making this a double bastard of an easy drinking 11% beer.
