COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a lacerative muther of a beer. The evil big brother of Arrogant Bastard Ale. It is strongly suggested you stay far, far away from this beer. Those foolish enough to venture close enough to taste will experience a punishingly unforgiving assault on the palate. íCourse thereís always the masochists...

Must say I was slightly disappointed. Deep mahogany pour with red highlights. Nose was quite complex, like a barleywine crossed with Celebrator. Cooked vegetables, candied yams, molasses. Taste was much the same, with a big hop character in the middle and a Dry bitter finish. Okay, but overrated?

Bomber into Aventinus glass. Purchased somewhere in Toledo. Um, over rated. Maybe the most over rated beer Iíve ever had. Thatís not saying itís the worst, or the most disappointing, but Top 50? Every Top 50 beer Iíve had I could understand how it got there, even if my particular opinion was different from the norm, but not with this one. Glowing yellow brown in the glass, with a yellow egg cream foam head thatís thick and forms a semi-solid film on top that is kind of impressive and at the same time almost gross. Smells like bananas floating in heavy cream with touches of brown sugar. Good to great racing is perhaps too quick to reach the top to be amazing. The lacing is a thin glittering film that was for some reason unappealing. The flavor and mouthfeel are harsh at first, and by that I donít mean strong necessarily, because strong can be smooth or intense and enjoyable. This was like nettles. Brashly but uninterestingly hoppy and uninspiringly malty, the unimpressive characteristics were, I guess, well-balanced. Some flabby sweetness countered the bitterness nicely. Black pepper in the beginning of the finish. End of the finish was meally with a bit of alcohol astringency. Body was medium to full overall and creamy sometines, which I guess was the best part about the beer. If there were one beer in my experience that I would say tasted like the essence of a bastard liquefied, it would be this one; and thatís a pretty half-assed compliment.

Honestly the Arrogant Bastard is better. This is just a bit too much bastard for me. It really is a punishingly unforgiving assault on the palate...but then again I guess thats the point. Itís still good for itís complexity since it took me quite a while to figure it all out. So for that I must say itís impressive. Iíll continue to be an arrogant bastard fan, but iíll leave this for you big bastards out there.

I have had Arrogant Bastard and Enjoyed it so I figure Double Bastard should bring a little extra to the table unfortunately I was not overly impressed. It was good but not quite what I expected. The color was reddish brown which gave it a nice hue but I was expecting more unforgiving assault on my palate that didnít happen.

Iíve been wanting to try this for a long, long time. And on another topic, Iíve been wondering what a much further attenuated version of a barleywine would taste like. So...two birds with one stone! Um. No pun intended. DB pours a dark amber with a small cap of khaki head that settles fairly quickly. A swirl of the glass brings it back though, and it looks good. Aroma of resiny hops, toasty carmel, plum, and clean alcohol. Hot on the palate, with a big aggressive alcohol presense. Some carmel, more resiny hops. A bright prickly character on the tongue. For my taste, a bit aggressive and overdone, but still interesting and clearly well crafted. Thanks Alaskanwarren! It was fun to finally taste this one!

Rather enjoyable, but this definitely not a brew you can drink too many of in one day. Hops, hops and more hops. A sweetness of caramel is definitely present, but not distracting. Nice head.

Thanks to TannerTavernBoys for sharing this monster. Aroma is sweet caramel with heavy alcohol presence and piney hops. Nice brown color to the beer with a white head that forms a halo around the glass. Flavor is very sweet with caramel malt and toffee. The finish is lots of piney hops and even more alcohol flavor. It is a bit thick and syrupy. A nice beer, but I prefer the Arrogant Bastard. The alcohol was not at all hidden in this. Definitely worth trying though.

Smelled hoppy and fruity, but more like an Imperial IPA than a Strong Ale. Poured a copper amber with a frothy, creamy off white head. Malty flavor, floral, hoppy. Finish is far too harsh to make this beer pleasing, too much palatable alcohol. Good, but better beers are smoother.

From a 22oz Bottle, 2060 Vintage. Pours a deep cherry wood color with a well sustaining layer of foamy cream head. Semi-transparent, beautiful coloring. Gripping aroma. A load of citrusy hops bites the nose instantly while drifting in for the first whiff. Creeping in more slowly gets past the somewhat harsh hops and moves on the reveal some soft white apricot fruits. Full bodied, heavy mouthfeel with a mild, soothing carbonation. A touch of caramelly sweetness starts out on the tongue before ending with the expected whallop of hop bitterness. Lots of malt, lots of body, but the complexity seems to be missing. Just a lot of crystal malt and piney spruce hop resin bitterness going on. On the plus side, the craftsmanship is excellent - great body, great head retention, and the alcohol is masked frighteningly well. Good overall, but the malt and hop characters strike me as rich, but not complex overall. For my money, I would rather simply drink the standard AB, as the flavors are practically the same, and take advantage of the lighter, less chewy body and increased drinkability.

Singular aroma of chocolate-like Balsam-fir branch. There could possibly be an edge of chinese food in there. Tempered candy. Pour of ruby with creamy rim. Highlu scorching ten percent, keeping this low. Again, mainly a singular balsam-fir orangey hop presentation, one dimensional and really all not that different from Arrogant. I donít appreciate this as much, because I feel that the extra alcohol throws this out of balance with the malt and that at this level the hop characters pigeonholeís itself.
