doppelmeup (49), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Apr 25, 2008 I have to admit that after having the Arrogant Bastard, which I didn’t really care for, I wasn’t sure that I would like the Double Bastard, as I have never considered myself a real hop-head.
Well, many thanks to Matt at the beer store for talking me into trying this gem.
This poured a gorgeous garnet color into a chalice. Great, creamy and sticky lace which lasted forever. Huge aromas of hops and malts. Incredible hop flavor balanced by incredible malt flavor. And the ABV was so well hidden that I couldn’t even taste it! This went down easier than probably any beer I’ve head
A truly great beer. Don’t pass this by. You’ll love it even if you, like me, aren’t a hophead!
smetrick (8), Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, USA does not count Jul 22, 2008 22 oz bottle, pured into chalice. An amber brown beer with almost no head. Pleasant aroma - coffee and brown sugar, fruit. Great palate with spice, coriander, toast, vanilla, yeast. Long finish- not too dry or sweet. Really nice beer in spite of very high ETOH. Drank this with spicy lamb curry- highly recommended. ATLBeerDog (137), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 20, 2008 Pours a murky orange brown – not the prettiest looking pour. Smells of citrusy/floral hops. First sip is much less hoppy than the aroma indicated. Very smooth and sweet with a welcomed bitterness to finish. Slight honey taste could be the beginning of some oxidation as this bottle has been in my cellar for about six months. This puppy is very drinkable as the 10% ABV is hidden. tuohyam (14), Enumclaw, Washington, USA Jul 13, 2008 Maybe the best beer I’ve had. A step beyond the regular bastard which is already a classic. colemgm8 (355), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Jul 12, 2008 ’07 bomber. I would call this a Barley Wine... pours a deep red with very little head which quickly dissipates. strong aroma filled with a touch of alcohol, dark fruits and sweet sugar. huge hop profile, especially on the finish, but is well hidden by the dominating malts. as soon as it hits your tongue, you can feel the huge body character behind this beer. very full and round.... filled with dynamic qualities of a world class beer. sweet and spicy on the front, very soft on the sides and thick and malty on the top with caramel, citrus, candi sugar, dark fruits and a touch of oak. Wonderful strong, sticky hop filled finish that sticks with you.... sticky and sweet. RollinHard (507), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Jul 10, 2008 Pours a dark brownish ruby with a moderate sized tan head. Aroma of grapefruit, tofee, toast, butter, pine-soaked caramel candies. Big malty taste hides the hops a bit. Sweet caramel dominates with brown sugar, grapefruit, and a very Stone-esque earthy hop flavor. Finishes with buttery hops and toasty aftertaste. Thick and full-feeling, pretty nice stuff.
