deepsouth (23), biloxi, Mississippi, USA May 2, 2008 i drank this beer out of a tremens tulip.
this beer poured a cloudy (perhaps sediment from cooling it in the rapid beverage chiller) orange-ish brown with very little and and little lacing. carbonation abounds. i should add that the beer cleared up and i didn’t see any sediment in the glass, so i am not sure what that was all about, but it was inconsequential.
this beer smells of raisins and caramel. a bit of spice in the nose as well. i can detect the alcohol, which is not a bad thing.
the taste is consistent with the smell, however it becomes much more complex as it warms. i can best describe the beginning of this beer as very agressive, starting sweet and finishing bitter, however superbly balanced.
the mouthfeel is quite full with hella carbonation. makes me wonder where the head went?
i shared this with barefootbrewer and another, but i think i could drink a whole bomber by myself. highly drinkable in my opinion. quite like a barleywine. actually closer to a barleywine than the last barleywine i had, avery hog heaven.
BeerBunker (106), Burbank, Illinois, USA Oct 11, 2008 Bottle from 2007. Pours murky brown with a fast dissapating white head. Aroma is of earthy hops, strong alcohol, and citrus. Taste was very bitter. The bitter hop flavors are accompanied by the tastes of dark fruits and toasted malts. A burning alcohol bite finishes off each sip. Surprising how balanced this beer is. Despite the bitter hops and strong alcohol presence, it is extremely drinkable. KnutAlbert (2327), Oslo, Norway Oct 6, 2008 Hazy brown beer, fine lacing. Sweet, but somehow balanced, until it throws a punch at you. Warming.
Full flavour, raisins, Belgian sourness. One of their very best, despite the boasts this is actually a nice sipping beer where both hops and malt are allowed to play! brokephibroke (54), , Colorado, USA Oct 5, 2008 Pours a hazy / sludgy off brown with nice tannish head. Earthy, oaky and alcohol nose. Coating thick on the palate. Taste of black tea with an alcohol warming. Malt for sure with lingering hops not noticed in the taste. This is a great beer and so much better than Arrogant! kosko20 (145), Bemidji, Minnesota, USA Oct 4, 2008 Pour is a dark ruby red that is impenetrable to light, thin light tan head. Aroma is woody, vanilla, fruity and mild notes of alcohol. Flavor is much of the same. Palate is sweet then bitter...wow so not impressed with this, hoping for better. Arrogant Bastard is much much much better. This lacks hop flavor and aroma...damn...but i gotta rerate, as much as i was hoping for better, its still good... DTM (399), Winters, California, USA Oct 2, 2008 Timfoolery and I have been looking for this beer and finally found it at a wine shop in Davis, CA. Poured a copper color with little head. I could smell the hops upon first pour. Got some of the bittnerness, but was backed up with a malty finish. Excellent on the palate. As it warmed a little the alcohol became more present, but still a wonderful beer.
