Draft, 2012 vintage. Deep copper hue, hazy, with one finger of dense barrel-colored head. Smooth, buttery vanilla, a hint of acidic oak, caramel, orange and grapefruit peel in the nose. Rich, unique flavor. Toasted oak is prominent and is both slightly astringent and buttery. Tons of French Vanilla, toffee and burnt sugar. Hops are bigger here than in the aroma, matched in flavor by impressive bitterness. Like a stronger, better orange creamsicle spiked with whiskey. The medium body is sugary and syrupy. Mild massaging carbonation; some peppery hops. Alcohol is obvious but not overpowering. My favorite Double Bastard iteration so far. Great oak flavor with enough Bastard still peeking through.

oaked: "a little sweeter and less intense than the "regular" double bastard. quite a treat if you can find it! i still like the regular a little better. although the wood notes are nice, the additional sweetness and comparitive lack of punch makes this one fall just a hair short...great beer though!" 4.2
dark oak: "A surprisingly unique, but at least equally as awesome companion to Dbl Bastard and the not quite as good Oaked Dbl Bastard. The charred oak really imparts a nice sweet and smokey quality without covering up the base. Can’t say it is definitely better than regular old DB as I didn’t do a side by side, but it is a big hoppy monster tasty brew." 4.4

From notes. On cask at Plan 9 Alehouse in Escondido in November 2013. Pours a nice reddish rusty brown with minimal head. AROMA of good pipe tobacco, big vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, and dark fruit. FLAVOR has lots of sticky toffee and caramel, big vanilla again, some dark fruit and dry oak, with some booze. Comes across as more boozy and less hoppy than the regular Double Bastard. But somehow this cask version is still smoother with a nice syrupy mouthfeel (though not much oak). I really liked this one. Tap at Stone something. Listed as 2012. Tons of oak, caramel, dark fruits. Tadte is similar but too strong on the oak. Really dry, beautiful day outside though.

Tap@ Avenue Pub 09.27.2013@07:00. Clear amber color with lasting tan sheen. Toasted caramel, dry wood, pit fruit aromas. Medium-full body with a smooth mouthfeel. Nice toasted wood, vanilla, pit fruit, spicy caramel flavors with a warming finish__very tasty.

On tap at Global Brew. Pours a ruby/amber with a thin light tan head with plenty of lace. Has a wet rag aroma that is not bad. Taste is sweet maple syrup malt and a smokiness. There’s also a whiskey character along with molasses and a bit of hop bitterness. Nice.

Not crazy about this one. Too viscous, unbalanced; malts are cloying, bittering hops are totally forward, but taste is rather simple, despite the aggressiveness. Just a big, big american ale, which i think could have been tipped over into a decent barleywine with some work.

22 ounce bottle. 2013 vintage. 11.25 % ABV. Pours dark amber color with a creamy beige head. Rich toasted malt aroma with notes of vanilla, slight oak, burnt caramel and dark fruit. Intense bittersweet toasted malt flavor has hints of burnt sugar, currants, roasted beets and vanilla. Big cloying, chewy mid taste. Finish is bitter and dry, long and spicy.

On tap at brewery. Hazy dark golden brown with a thin creamy off white head. Big oak, caramel, molasses, cereal grain, vanilla and citrus aroma and taste with a bitter oaky tannic finish and a bright full bodied palate. Nice.

Draught @ Brouwer’s Café: Reddish caramel, thin frothy beige head, spotty lacing. Huge graham cracker and caramel nose. Has a slight burnt or spicy vanilla like quality. Sweet toasted malts on the tongue. Some oak and vanilla as well. Body and mouthfeel are moderate. Spicy finish, oak, vanilla, some marshmallow. A weird beer overall. Very unique at least. Lingering toasted oak. Very simple overall, toasted oak. Fun, but the underlying beer is not at hand. Simply toasted oak is how I would describe this one. Oh, and sweet. Tasty, interesting, if a little simple.
