Clusters were the dominant hop in the US brewing industry literally for centuries, and the forerunner of many of our modern Northwest varieties. They have a unique aroma with quite a bit of citrus and a heft of herbal goodness. Clusterf#ck features Clusters in the kettle, in the hop back, and especially in the fermenter for dry-hopping. Pilsner and honey malt form the baseline. This yearís version is a bit stronger and hoppier than last yearís... cheers to that!

A.K.A. Clusterfuck I.P.A.. Itís an average single-hop beer that benefits from having a higher alcohol count.

Sampled at the brewpub. Clear golden. White foam. Gentle and subtle floral and fruit. Fairly big bitterness considering the subtleness of flavors. Light spiciness. Nice.

Pale dandelion with a soft haze and a fuzzy off-white head. The cluster hops give this an earthy, herbal aroma like wet soil. Yeast contribute a red-apple fruitiness. Flavor is very light, and thereís no sign of the 85 IBU of bitterness. Smells and tastes more like an American Pilsner than an IPA. Try again, Double Mountain.

As a home brewer Iíve long liked these hops, and double mountain turns them loose. I canít forget a beer like Green Flashís Palate Wrecker for itís pine intensity, but Cluster sets that piney a little to the back, cushioned in caramel and lemon. The aroma is more assertively pine, with sawdust & caramel, clean finish.

500 ml bottled on: 06/04/14. Opaque paler orange, whiter foam mostly fades. Aroma of fruity citrus hop. Herbal berry fruity hop taste, somewhat tropical, faintly floral and spiced, mild sweet malts, low bitterness. Softer than average carbonation, medium bodied, well hopped. Hardly a series of chaotic events. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

UPDATED: JUN 23, 2015 Bottle (500ml $4.50) Hazy Golden medium head. Aroma Skunky. Bottle was 6 months old. Need to retry a fresh one. Lots and Lots of floaters (bottle conditioned?). Taste: This was better. Some sweetness and citris. Little bitterness. Update 6/23/2015: Was 2.7 now 3.0. Fresh bottle was much improved, but still not a favorite Retry Fresh one.

Citrusy and piney hops. A little sweet leaning, but bitter enough to notice too. I like the pils malt, but still a little heavy for my taste.

On tap at bier thirty. Pours out a golden topped with a small head. Nose is citrus pine hops and some sweetness. Taste is more of the hop combo citrus and pine with a good malt bill.

500 ml bottle. Pours a hazy gold with light head and some floating sediment. Aromas of candied citrus, tropical fruit and toasted malts. Flavors of pine/spruce and bitter citrus peel with a late bitter vegetable note. Nice experiment using the older hops but I think Iíll avoid in the future.

A light sweet malty body well balanced against piney citrus hop profile, lighter on the bitterness but pleasant.
