The Devilís Kriek employed a Flanders Red Ale base prior to the addition of 200 lbs of Bing Cherries from Mattís orchard in Duke Valley. The Devilís Kriek developed a classic Brett character typical of beers in the style and used a mixture of three yeast strains to complete itís mission to provide complexity.

Tasted on 3/15/15 from a capped 375mL bottle, big thanks to Chris for sending me this one. Pours deep, blood red, with an average, fizzy pink head that quickly disappears. The nose is full of, and really dominated by really fresh, tart, juicy cherry, a very light touch of dark cereal malt, some lemon tartness, a touch of nutty, lightly rich vanilla oak. The flavor has a nice tart cherry attack, moving to tart lemon peel, more juicy cherry, and then plenty of lightly nutty oak, more cereal malt than on the nose, and just a hint of vanilla. The body is on the verge of full with lively, fizzy carbonation, and a long tart, juicy cherry, cereal malt, and acidic finish.

Pour out of 375 ml bottle, reddish pour with thin white head, aroma brought notes of cherry, berry, vanilla, touch of funk, lemon, hints of biscuit as well. Taste is a mix of cherry, lemon, tart fruit, hints of grain into a bit of earth, berry, hints of slight funk, finishing slightly sweet, slightly tart.

Pours a rusty ruby brown color with two fingers of eggshell foam. Nose is leyeres of horseblanket, cherry flesh, some sweet malt. Palate follows with nice balance of tartness, sweet underlying malts, toasted grain, vinous cherry and layers of barnyard and musty basement funk linger.

Bottle pour split. Pours a reddish pink color with no head. Sour cherries aroma. Flavor is much more sweet than sour. A lot of fresh red cherry flavor. Finishes more on the sour side. Fun beer here. Solid kriek.

375 ml bottle, 2013 version, served in a tulip glass. Pours bright murky deep reddish copper, with very thin white head. Aroma is big sour notes up front, then dark cherries that are mostly sour, light residual sweetness. Taste is unobtrusive light caramel malt, mild tartness mid-palate, and a big range of cherry flavors on the finish. ABV is a bit high, but not out of place with the flavor here. Easy drinking. No doubt that a great deal of effort went into this, but the price is quite high for what you get. For the price (~$17 a bottle) this should be a world class sour - and it simply isnít. Honestly if this were in the $10-$12 range Iíd be a much bigger fan. That said, very pleasant beer.

Pours a deep red body. Nose of sour yet sweet cherries. Nice tartness perhaps a tad too sweet. Fun.

Bottle - Tart cherry, soured malts and some worchester sauce. Cleanish red copper with a thin beige head. Light sour cherry and some sorted dark malts. Nice for an American sour.

Bottle (375 ml). 2013 vintage. 9.3 % abv. From kbudd19, thanks!

Appearance: Deep pinkish red with no head and no lacing.

Aroma: A mix of sour and sweet cherries with citric notes, acetic notes too, cheesy presence and alcohol.

Taste: Sour cherries with light sweetness, moderate acidity, cheesy notes, light herbal presence and alcohol.

Palate: Medium body. Soft carbonation. A tad syrupy mouthfeel. Warming finish with a light lingering cherry presence.

Overall: Lack of complexity and also lack of cohesion. No doubt thereís an important cherry presence here, but thereís no real direction. The abv is too high and the alcohol hinder the drinkability. Not bad, but I wouldnít revisit.

So Iíd been staring at these bottle (different vintages) at The Bier Stein in Eugene all summer. At a near $18 price tag with a 93% here on RateBeer I kept passing. Iím glad I did. Tried this on tap last week at Chucks 85th and while itís nice and tart in the cherry funk department, itís just not as full as something I want to pay $18 for. Glad I got to try it on tap though!

bottle shared by mathieuc, thanks bro! pours hazy bright red with a small bubbly off-white cap showing minimal retention and lacing. very cheesy, citric cherries - never puckering, rosť sparkling wine-ish, lots of fresh grass, some candies, dusty and very chalky, woodsy - hint of vanilla, light to medium acidity - few welcoming acetic notes, along lactic and citric mostly. average to light carbonation, light body - surprisingly light and drinkable for its abv, tart and almost dry grassy finish. not really a flanders red but it a nicely crafted fruit sour.
