COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This year’s release of the Devil’s Kriek marks the fourth year and most tart version. The 2011 version features the addition of more cherries to the fermenter, and the wild yeast Brettanomyces Lambicus was allowed free reign for an additional two months in aging to develop it’s sourness and character. All said and done, the beer was kept at cellar temperature for 13 months prior to kegging and on whole fruit for 50 weeks.

The Devil’s Kriek employed a Flanders Red Ale base prior to the addition of 200 lbs of Bing Cherries from Matt’s orchard in Duke Valley. The Devil’s Kriek developed a classic Brett character typical of beers in the style and used a mixture of three yeast strains to complete it’s mission to provide complexity.

Draft at Uber. I had the first batch of this and recall it being less than remarkable. However, this time around I am very impressed. Pours a bright clean red with a brown tint and a respectable clean white head. Nose is very much sour cherry forward with a tart dance of lactic and hints of funky brett. Picking up some damp oak, slightly earthen, yeast spice melds with the sour cherries. Great nose. All of the aromas in the nose show up on the palate, clean, solid fruit profile with a balance of lambicus. I could drink many glasses of this.

Draft @ Double Mountain. Pours a deep red with no head. Nose of sour cherries, light oak, tart, lactic and some funkiness. Taste is initially tart cherries with some sweetness. A bit of wood and funk. Medium dry finish with decent carbonation. Found this one quite enjoyable.

Growler shared at the September iteration of the Santa Cruz tasting series. Pours a deep clear copper-ruby with a fizzy off-white head. Aroma has got a nice mix of sweet and sour cherry notes with a malty background. Flavor is sour cherry cola, slight brown malts, and a touch of dusty musty brett. A very good American flanders - not too sweet.

Growler. Deep, clear red color with a small head. Having this right after the rainier kriek, this is maltier and a touch sweeter with less obvious alcohol and perhaps a little more cherry flavor, though both beers show the cherry mostly in sourness and not much else. Lots of big acidity and a mouth-watering but smooth finish. Not much carbonation but I’m sure the serving format is to blame. I like the rainier a little more but this is another good sour from Double Mountain.

Nice balance of sweet and sour on the nose - cherries, oak barrel, funk, lactic sour notes, some candi sugar sweetness, a hint of dust. Pours reddish, nice off reddish whtie head. The flavor is a nice balance of sour and sweet. Wonderful sour cherry notes, oak, some moderate candied sweetness, yeast notes, lightly funky, sour, tart. Drinks nicely at 8.3%. Really good stuff here.

Tap @ Belmont Station during Puckerfest... Poured ruby red with a thin, white-ish head. Decent funkiness on this year’s vintage. Strong cherry sweetness. Dark fruits, oak and candied malt tones. A little booziness heat just before the strong sourness takes over. Tart, ripe fruit tones, almond extract and maraschino cherries, big yeast and funkiness, Brett, and a strong acidity reminiscent of a vinegar based dressing. Best example of the Devils Kriek so far.
