The “IRA”, as it’s known around here, marries a ruby red color and rich body with the hop flavors of an IPA. Our unique ale yeast strain adds a delicious layer of complexity. One of the first beers we made, and an enduring favorite. Brewed with Gambrinus Organic Pilsner malt, imported crystal malt, Simcoe and Brewers’ Gold hops. 6.8% ABV, 55 BU

Sampled at GCBF ’10, pours amber. Aroma and flavour of caramel malts upfront, with the hops kicking in later. Decent.

Cask @ Brouwers Cafe. Hazy amber pour, pink/tan head leaves a moderate lace. Grassy/kaya and flowery aroma, balanced towards hops but the sweet malt isn’t overwhelmed. Medium body with fine carbonation. Earthy towards the dry finish.

On draft in of all places in a Japanese restaurant in Ashland, Oregon. . Came a hazy copper colored pour with a small white head. Medium lacing. Nose of citrus and caramel malts. Fairly full body and slick mouthfeel. Flavor is lightly bitter and full of lively nuances. Dry bitter finish, Very good. \

I was a big fan of this beer. IT looked great, it tasted even better. It had a nice hop profile, had a unique malty spiciness, was very smooth. Oregon brewers have it going on. This is a great great beer.

This is by far the best example of a "Belgian IPA" that I have tasted. Deceptively simple (Nothing but Gambrinus Pils and Imported Crystal 75L malts, Brewer’s Gold and Simcoe hops, and the delicious Trappistes Rochefort yeast strain. Yet, this simple recipe comes together to make a really outstanding, unique IPA. In every way it tastes American, but the Belgian yeast just adds a wonderful subtle something that puts this beer over-the-top. Sadly, many places serve this beer under-carbed, but if you get this beer at the right place (ideally the fantastic Double Mountain taproom), you are in for a treat.

Draught @ Paddy’s in Portland:   Reddish amber, slight haze, thin to moderate frothy off-white head, nice lacing.   Mealy nose, pale hoppiness, slight soil and earthiness.   Malty Pale is what this comes across as.   Clean.   Citrus tang on the finish.   Yea, malty Pale for certain.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Tiz okay.   Wouldn’t mind if it was a little more Amberish (malty) and perhaps with a bit more sweetness.

tap at Henry’s in Portland, ruby/amber pour thin tan head, sweet aroma of malt with noticeable hop aroma, sticky malt/hop flavor with residual sweetness on palate, definitely "bigger" then any other red i’ve had!
