Cask at the Magpie & Crown, Brentford. Dark brown seems odd for a spring special but I guess we’ve all just got too used to hoppy golden ales. There’s toffee and hints of sour apples and demerara, a satisfyingly tangy and chewy body, and bitter and woody hops with a long bitter finish. Very nice.

Cask conditioned at Far from the Madding Crowd, Oxford. Brown to copper with white head. Quite a sweetish, darker type bitter with a roasted oat type flavour. I didn’t know about the spices, but I had written ginger down as a background flavour. A little unbalanced but still easily drinkable.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 1/03/10. Pale brown in colour with a lacy, off-white head. Chewy malts, a touch of summer fruits and decent, bitter finish. Ok.

Cask @ London Drinker 25: It looks like dark, un-milked coffee. It smells of dark crisp toffee and english hops. It has a rather Christmassy quality to it. The mouth echoes the yuletide feeling of the aroma, it is a little heavier on the caramel flavours though. It is thick and smooth on the tongue. The spices are geniuosly mellow. Delicious.

Cask @ Cockney Pub, Aarhus.
Pours deep redish amber with a medium, creamy, off-white head. Leaves super lacing. Aroma is sweetly fruity, weak berries and butter, some malt and caramel. Low carbonation, a little thin. Flavour is quite dry, fine caramel backbone and a good hoppiness. Fine brew.
