Originally offered as a Christmas special, this old ale has proven to be a favourite all year round. Distinctive chocolate and orange flavour notes work excellently against a rich, hoppy background.

Cask @ Nation of Shopkeepers, Leeds. Deep ruby colour. Chocolate digestives, cocoa powder and a hint of Cointreau on the nose. Sweet hot chocolate, dark malts and syrupy orange in the taste. Smooth, oily mouthfeel. A bit odd, but certainly well executed.

Cask @ The Bricklayers Arms. The pour’s deep brown with a tiny off-white head. The nose is strong sweet lactose, hot chocolate and plenty of marshamallow sweetness. The taste is lactose sweetness, kinder bueno, rich cream and cocoa. Just a hint of citrus hoppiness on the long, smooth finish. Velvety - in very nice condition. Overall, as a novelty this works quite nicely! Sweet flavours, sure, but very drinkable.

Cask @ Haymarket, Edinburgh 060912
Dark ruby, clear, off white think head, good lacing
Aroma - soft milk chocolate, dark malts, soft on the nose
Taste - soft chocolate dark malts, slight fruity tang. slight hint of bitter zest, not really getting the orange, somple flavour, easy for 5.8%, bit 1 dimensional tbh
Palate - soft carb, medium body, nice smooth malts. Finish - smooth soft dark malts, vague soft bitter linger
Overall - OK, bit low on flavour though

The head is medium, body brown-red. It smells chocolate, sweet creamy pudding, a bit orange. The taste is bitter, orange, chocolate. Interesting and not bad. 11/12/11/11/-/11

Cask at Great British Beer Festival. Dark rusty beer with a thick bubble top. Lots of chocolate on the nose with a slight orange. Thankfully that orange comes through in the mouth and melds with the chocolate to produce a winner. Middle of the beer is nice and bitter but the finish is sweet. Yum.

Cask gravity, The Crown Summer BF, Nuneaton, 02/06/12. Deep ruby fringed briefly with beige. Boozy, Cointreau with background roast nose. Flavour of unsubtly spiced witbier, concentrated, scattered with burnt toast. Rubbery hints. Kind of works.

Pigs Ear. Clear dark brown beer. Good sized pale cream coloured head. Light smooth palate. No carbonation. Dry. Very dry! Smooth dark chocolate - powdery. The fruit is saccahrin sweet and is err - apple! There is a little orange as well! Dry finish. Too dry and way to appley!
