Cask at the Le Gothique Wandsworth Beer Festival on 29 March 2012. Poured black, with a rocky tan head. Aroma was slightly subdued, but there was definite roasted malt, dark cocoa and slight Oxo. Thick, full palate. Dark fruit flavours, with oily bitterness and coffee. Finish was dark fruit, burnt malt and toasted bread.

Cask-conditioned, on gravity, at Bristol Beer Festival, March 2014. Near black with a thin, off-white head. Dense, roasted malts, some dark chocolate and a touch of hedgerow hops, before a toasty finish. Good.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
500ml bottle. pours jet black. extremely thick oily pour. my bottle was flat as a pancake. no head. i see others had a reasonable head so i’d like this again with some carbonation. but it was good nonetheless. aroma is of coffee, molasses and burnt toast. taste is hampered somewhat by the lack of carbonation. i think it just tastes...off... extremely bitter, sour after taste. the texture is so thick! nice coffee notes and bitter chocolate. i want this again.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Gravity at Battersea Beer Festival, pours a deep black-brown with a fast-settling head, cocoa and Bisto nose, dry umami palate with cocoa and coffee hints and a bitter overtone. A little shallow for the strength?

500ml bottle from Beers of Europe, shared at home. Pours jet black with a thin tan head, nice lacing. Lots of chocolate and coffee on the aroma. Taste has a good bitterness too. Creamy and rich, full-bodied. Liqourice coming through at the end. Very nice.
