2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 Stellaaaa (213) - Tennessee, USA - SEP 23, 2010
UPDATED: SEP 24, 2010 Pours an opaque black with a tan head. It has a nice malty aroma. The taste is of malt with LOTS of alcohol. The corn syrup gave it a really sticky mouthfeel, and it was overly cloying. I also got some woody notes. It reminded me too much of the cheap scotch I drank at community college. I couldn’t finish it.

Dark chestnut pour with a fairly frothy tan head. Some residual sticky lacing. A stout from Jamaica.....I can honestly say I wasn’t expecting this to be good. Some primary stout aromas are evident but subdued....roasted coffee, chocolate, caramel....but there is a predominant grapey, soy sharpness that takes center stage. Lively carbonation fizz on the tongue. Very sweet but not cloying with a sour funkiness that is pretty good actually. Red wine, tobacco and dried prunes. Fades slowly into the traditional stout notes of coffee and chocolate that tend to sit on the back of your tongue and throat for a while. Not anything really in the way of hoppy bitterness. I’m thinking more like a black lager, but sweeter, the classic characteristics that would make this a stout are there but not bold enough. It is interesting though and pretty tasty.

Bottle. LCBO. Pours deep dark brown with large fast disappearing beige head. Sweet brown sugar with roast malt in aroma. Medium bodied, quite smooth. Taste sweetness predominates, toffee and caramel with some roast malt flavour giving the beer a stout character. Too sweet for my taste.

Weird. More a mild than a stout. The alcohol is well hidden and there’s a milky slightly sour flavour to it that I really like. Good finish but quite short lived a bit like a lager in fact.

bottle courtesy Danny at the Tally tasting. Average stout here, mild roast, some smoke, light noble hop finish. Carbonation is moderate, ends dry.

Black, thin beige head. Very sweet aroma, like molasses and a little bit of honey, then some prune or fruit; then maybe a whiff of coffee and rum. Flavor is pretty much what the aroma suggests - very sweet, very fruity, with some traditional stout flavors in the background.
