Black body with a very thick and modestly retained tan head. the aroma is at first a very earthy variety of roastiness. Notes of coffee beans, milk chocolate, toasty grains and caramelized sugar cane. Touches of marshmallow creme. The aroma is unique enough to warrant repeated whiffs. Some sourness and lactic acid encroaches upon further warming. Mild alcohol for the strength paired awkwardly with hints of anise root round out the aroma. The flavor is Bitterness is nonexistent. Overly sweet, nearly completely enveloping the roast. Complexity is useless, noticeable or not, when it’s so outshined by ridiculous cloying malts and sugars. Higher alcohol avert such an abhorrent lack of dryness. Albeit, this is a sweet stout, but my goodness, enough is enough. This would be fantastic inside chocolate candies in small doses. The finish is sweet and has hints of raisins and sugar plums. Alcohol is lightly warming late. The mouthfeel is lightly to moderately carbonated and has little initial or residual stickiness, as was expected upon first sweet sip. This has enough sweetness in one bottle to accomodate an entire barrel.

Courtesy Dragonstout. Black. Brown edges. Small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, licorice, and sugar. Flavor adds burnt sugar, dark fruits, and light roastiness. Smooth, medium body. Very drinkable.

Pours black with a mostly receding tan head. Aroma of dark malt, crystal, and airy toffee. Taste is oxidized roast, with light notes of chocolate and foamy crystal malt. Mouthfeel is full bodied with lactose, and lush carbonation. Not good, would not drink again.

Completely opaque black pour with a decent tan head that fades quickly into a little tan ring and some filmy froth. Malty aroma with a vaguely metallic tang. Oh my god, this is sweet. malty, sugary, corn syrup-laced coffee with a bit of buttery toffee and chocolate. The dominating flavor, though, unfortunately, is the corn syrup. The finish is, weirdly, just like the flavor with no discernable hop presence or bitterness. Too sweet by half, it’s thin-bodied and lacking in complexity. The best thing I can say is that it masks the alcohol well. Not a BAD beer, I guess, but not a particularly good one.

skortila (4034) - Baarn, NETHERLANDS - MAY 28, 2007
Aroma of moderate roasted malts, caramel and chocolate. Bit fruity. Black coloured with a lasting, thin, brown head. Taste is sweet, caramel malty with some dried fruits, some sugar, some raisin. Carbonated with a light-medium body. Not really great, but enjoyable.

pours black. low carbonation. aroma is caramel, booze, some roast? flavor is lots of caramel, some fruit, suprisingly noticable booze for the 7.5%. finish is definitely sweet. I’m sure this would be a great find in jamaica, but here, it’s nothing to seek out.

300 mL bottle from LCBO, served cool in a tulip. MA14/07

App.: Deep brown-black withg reddish hues, smallish mocha head, no light transmission. Aroma: Lots of blackstrap molasses, some berries/currants, rich vanilla, a touch of funk, wood, licorice; a little too much alcohol, a touch of chocolate and nuts. Palate: Medium bodied, some powderiness and syrupiness, very soft carbonation. Flav.: Quite fruity – berries, grapes, cherries; some chocolate and vanilla, molasses and licorice; sweet to the point of being cloying; too much alcohol on the finish.

Nothing like sitting on the beach in Jamaica, sipping a cold, refreshing Dragon Stout. Ja says: you crazy, mon.
