3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 MartinT (6934) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 22, 2010
My Bottom Line:
Caramel sweetness, alcohol heat and wooden hop bitterness conjure up a simple Belgian-style Strong Ale which is not really close to the Quadrupel profile expected.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam floats atop the hazy amber (this is very light for a Quadrupel...)
-Acetaldehyde looms, never quite disappearing.
-Dry bready yeast flavors don’t actually help the flavor profile.
-This is still drinkable as a Barley Wine (for example), but as the announced Quadrupel, it is quite the disappointment.
Bottle.

750ml bottle
Hazy golden, a bit malty, this seemed more like a barleywine with some belgian yeast than a quad

Poured a clear copper color with a white head. Light notes of alcohol are the first thing to hit the nose in the aroma. The rest was fruity and sweet. Fruity flavor with a little tartness to it. Medium to full bodied and very warming.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BigBeer45 (1118) - Michigan, USA - FEB 22, 2010
750ml Bottle from Champanes,
had to use a pare of pliers to get the cork out, sampled in a Kuhnhenn tulip and Chimay Trappist glass,
has a burnt orange and red pour with a small off-white head, this ale has some haze to it,
aromas of light fruit – white raisin, caramel, bread, spicy phenol alcohol - pepper, some citrus and sweet floral scents,
flavors of sweet bread, cake mix, light caramel, some citrus and light fruit, light raisin, and malt – bread sweetness,
finish has some pepper,
alcohol is felt on the palate but not like I was expecting for a 11.6% ale, the alcohol is hidden well,
mouth feel is more than medium,
hard to believe this is a 11.6% drink, did I say the alcohol is hidden pretty well?
Also, I am surprised at how this drink gets smoother as it warms to room temperature where I have found Belgian Strong Ales get more alcoholy as they get warmer, interesting drink.

25.4 oz bottle. Cloudy brown with a haze. Nose is yeast, ginger, golden raisin and spearmint bubblegum. Medium body with a slight tang and a silky finish. Taste is candi, plum and yeast. Citrus peel kicks in with over-ripe peach; tailing bitterness. Maybe this needs some age, still pretty raw.

UPDATED: NOV 16, 2009 750 thanks to dmschefke. Pours orange with decent head. Fruity. Not overwhelming for the style and not very caramel-ish. A light quad. Some sugar taste. Bit of toffee, but again, not very strong. Memories of drinking at Dragonmead when I lived in the area. Never saw this bottled in the five years I was there.
