Dogbrick (4837) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - MAY 10, 2012
Sample at the brewpub. This brew pours a dark brownish-black color with a medium light tan head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of toasted malt and chocolate. Medium body with a roasted malt character and notes of mild hops and chocolate. The finish is semi-dry with a chocolate malt aftertaste. Decent all around.

Silphium (2718) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - SEP 18, 2011
On tap at HopCat, Grand Rapids. Deep red-brown body, thick tan head. Nose of soapy hops, cocoa, and berries. Toasty body with ample dark chocolate, also some toast, biscuit, tobacco, and raisin, balanced by soapy herbal hops. Thin with prickly carbonation. Insubstantial for the style.

Strykzone (3132) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - SEP 17, 2011
On draft at Hop Cat. Dark and almost black. Carbonation can be seen rising in tan bubbles. A smoky chocolate nose that also has anise. This has big malts that include chocolate and dark fruit. A bit of attitude seeps through. That is undescribable but indistinguishable. Huh? Some hops show up later and add bitterness and citrus. Tjis is interesting and kind of out there. Tasty and interesting.

Sample at Dragonmead on 7/23/11. Darkest brown pour with a thin beige head. Lagery and fruity nose with some chocolate. Malty flavor up front with a bit of dark berry and chocolate before a semi-roasty finish.

On at at the Dragonmead Brewery. Poured a dark black color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of dark fruits, licorice, and chocolate. Tastes of the same dark fruits, chocolate, and roast.

Tap at Dragonmead. Dark black pour. The nose is quite lovely. Clean and well lagered dark malt base. A bit of light licorice and sweet malt. A clean toastiness through the middle along with some coffee and clean roasted malt. Sweet but not cloying and not dirty. Pretty nice really.

Tap @ Dragonmead - dark pour, chocolately, molasses. some vineous and prunes and dark fruit. Nice carbonation, medium bodied. Finishes with some carbonic tartness and hoppy bitterness. Ok.

hopscotch (7532) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - AUG 11, 2010
Draft… RBSG 2010… Pours very dark with no real head. When held to light, a beautiful crimson hue is revealed. The bouquet presents milk chocolate and tawny port. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and stinging carbonation. Simple, sweet, chocolaty flavor. Finishes deeply roasted and medium sweet.

Weird stuff. Buttery, roasted malts. Earthy and grainy. Chocolate mostly. Too thin. Very indistinct.

MiBG Winter Fest 2010: Deep borwn hue with a frothy tan head. The aroma has notes of raisin, fig, mango, toast and roasted malts, herbal hops and earthy esters. The taste starts and is loaded with twangy fruits supported by roasted barley and a hint of noble hops. The mouth feel is oily and lush. This is quite good but is indeed too fruity and estery for it’s own good.
